{"id":801337,"date":"2026-08-03T15:15:17","date_gmt":"2026-08-03T15:15:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/801337\/"},"modified":"2026-08-03T15:15:17","modified_gmt":"2026-08-03T15:15:17","slug":"there-might-be-a-way-to-observe-dark-matter-decaying-into-gravity-particles-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/801337\/","title":{"rendered":"There Might Be a Way to Observe Dark Matter Decaying Into Gravity Particles : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bewilderingly, most of the matter in the Universe seems to be invisible.<\/p>\n<p>All the visible stuff like galaxies, stars, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-find-the-first-true-sugar-ever-detected-in-interstellar-space\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sugary, raspberry-flavored gas clouds<\/a> that leave us so jaw-gapingly awed (and hungry) only make up about 15 percent of the Universe&#8217;s matter.<\/p>\n<p>The rest is composed of unseen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/dark-matter\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dark matter<\/a>, which only interacts with gravity and seems essential for anchoring major celestial structures like galaxies and clusters of galaxies.<\/p>\n<p>Current attempts to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/dark-matter-may-have-been-detected-by-accident-scientists-reveal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">detect dark matter<\/a>, whatever it may be, include using vats of super-cold <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/only-one-experiment-has-detected-dark-matter-now-the-plot-has-thickened\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">liquid xenon<\/a> or probing the glowing heart of the Milky Way for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/mysterious-glow-detected-in-space-could-be-dark-matter-destroying-itself\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explosively self-annihilating particles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yet such efforts have failed to demystify this murkiest of matters \u2013 perhaps because we&#8217;ve been looking in the wrong places.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of seeking, say, exploding  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/dark-matter\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73017\" data-postid=\"211764\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">dark matter<\/a>, researchers say that perhaps we should search for the signs of dark matter transforming into even more esoteric particles, such as the hypothetical gravitons that may imbue the Universe with gravity.<\/p>\n<p>As detailed in a paper published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1103\/yvs5-67cj\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Physical Review D<\/a>, a team of physicists suggests searching for the indirect signs of dark matter decaying into gravitational particles, which themselves may then transform into particles of light.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1785770112_774_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>This strategy relies on the Gertsenshtein effect, &#8220;whereby the gravitons produced in dark matter decays can convert to photons in large-scale magnetic fields along the line of sight to an observer,&#8221; the researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1103\/yvs5-67cj\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explain<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Gravitons are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/quantum-experiment-could-finally-reveal-the-elusive-gravity-particle\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hypothetical particles<\/a> thought to carry the force of gravity, similar to how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/can-we-really-create-infinite-photons-physicists-reveal-what-might-happen-if-we-try-to-cut-light-in-half\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">photons<\/a> carry the electromagnetic force.<\/p>\n<p>Yet gravitons have eluded science for over a century. We have little, if any, evidence that gravitons exist, and their interactions may be so weak that some physicists believe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/quantum-experiment-could-finally-reveal-the-elusive-gravity-particle\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">we&#8217;ll never detect them<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So the researchers&#8217; novel technique focuses on a cascade of cosmic decay.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1440\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/graviton.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-211766\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A conceptual rendition highlighting the invisible, gravity-propagating effects of gravitons. <a href=\"https:\/\/observatoiredeparis.psl.eu\/a-new-constraint-on-the-mass.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">(Y. Gominet IMCCE\/Observatoire de Paris\/textures from NASA)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dark matter particles in the early Universe may have decayed into gravitons, which may have been converted into gamma-ray photons as they propagated through the magnetic fields between galaxies.<\/p>\n<p>This is most likely to occur within the cosmological filaments of gas, dust, and stars that link <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/behold-the-first-direct-images-of-the-cosmic-web-in-the-dark-reaches-of-the-universe\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the cosmic web<\/a>, the largest known structure in the Universe, the researchers say.<\/p>\n<p>As the researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1103\/yvs5-67cj\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">note<\/a>, it is estimated that these filaments comprise up to 30 percent of our present <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hubble_volume\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hubble volume<\/a>, the observable portion of our Universe beyond which objects are receding faster than the speed of light <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/best-meaurement-yet-of-cosmic-expansion-confirms-the-universe-has-a-very-big-problem\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">as the Universe expands<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1552\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_0247.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-211770\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A schematic illustration of the authors&#8217; proposed search strategy, focused on finding evidence of dark matter decaying into gravitons and then into photons via the Gertsenshtein effect. <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1103\/yvs5-67cj\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">(Dunsky et al., Physical Review D, 2026)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Filaments also exhibit expansive magnetic fields that remain coherent, or uniform, across millions of light-years.<\/p>\n<p>These magnetic fields are also very weak, just billionths of a gauss in strength, compared to Earth&#8217;s surface magnetic field of around 0.5 gauss, which is still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/after-a-quiet-decade-this-intense-magnetic-star-is-showing-signs-of-waking-again\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">100 times weaker than your typical fridge magnet<\/a> (yes, weaker, that&#8217;s not a typo).<\/p>\n<p>So, addressing the big question: How will the researchers know if they&#8217;ve actually discovered this potential dark-matter-graviton-photon decay?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"3072\" height=\"3072\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Observable_Universe_with_Measurements_01.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-211771\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The Hubble volume is represented by the inner blue circle. <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Observable_Universe_with_Measurements_01.png\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">(Andrew Z.
