Lollapalooza’s promoter, C3 Presents, is now on the hook for the cleanup, including what could be a costly restoration of Grant Park’s grass, which had disappeared under the crowds by the festival’s third day.

“It certainly is a presence,” Radakovich, 36, who hails from the Pacific Northwest, said of the festival that has made Grant Park home for more than 20 years. She and Arslanian, 56, of Canada, joined dog walkers and runners in weaving around roadblocks and cleanup crews while an artist on a nearby bench sketched a scene of the park — festival aftermath and all.

Radakovich noted the event complicated sightseeing plans in nearby Millennium Park. “I couldn’t get to the Bean yesterday,” she said.

Social media posts and news photos showed festivalgoers splashing through puddles, mourning ruined shoes and wrestling in deep mud after the weekend rain. Organizers laid wood-chip mulch over the soggiest stretches of the festival grounds to keep people from slipping.

The arrests were mostly for criminal trespass, according to the Chicago Police Department. Three involved battery or assault, and one involved an “unmanned aircraft,” likely a drone.

At an unrelated news conference on Monday, Mayor Brandon Johnson declared the weekend a success, mess or not.

“Is it worth 400,000 people coming into our city over the course of four days, as a complement to having more visitors come to our city than any other time in the history of Chicago?” Johnson asked rhetorically. “And those young people that are here, they’re just providing the prelude of what’s to come. The concert promotion company must also clean off posters and stickers hung by guerrilla marketers on the light poles lining Columbus and Congress.

The most time-consuming part of the post-Lolla cleanup, though, is typically restoring Grant Park to its “pre-load-in” condition — replanting bushes, trees and flowers, fixing mesh fencing, andseeding or sodding the festival grounds. The Chicago Park District and Lollapalooza organizers are required to assess the damage within a week of the festival’s last day and agree on a restoration plan.

Festivalgoers slog through mud at Lollapalooza in Grant Park on Aug.
1, 2026. Cleanup for the 2011 festival, known as one of the muddiest in recent memory, cost $1 million. Park District spokeswoman Irene Tostado said in a written statement Monday that she expects the walk-through to assess damage the week of Aug. 10. “We will have a better grasp of timing for the restoration after the walk-through is complete,” she said.

The current park district contract did not include an ask from some park and neighborhood advocates that the company — which also hosts the Sueños Music Festival at Grant Park — chip in for longer-term infrastructure work.

Given the cost and downtime of repairing the grounds year after year, some had hoped the festival would help pay for wastewater and flood management in and around upper and lower Hutchinson Field, where most big event action takes place. That didn’t make it into the contract signed by former Mayor Lori Lightfoot. C3 Presents did agree to resurface Grant Park’s tennis courts and to build new pickleball courts.

As part of its Grant Park framework, the park district included improved drainage systems for the lawn at lower Hutchinson Field and added “performance infrastructure” — loading areas and heavy-vehicle parking — to cut down on recovery time between events. That framework remains more of a wish list, contingent on future funding.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" lazyautosizes lazyload" alt="Workers pack up Lollapalooza stages and tents in muddy Hutchinson Field at the south end of Chicago's Grant Park on Aug. 3, 2026. If it does happen, she hopes the district considers adding turf instead of grass. Whether seed or sod, it takes time to grow in, limiting public access to the park.

Sandee Fenton, spokeswoman for C3, declined to comment on whether the company would support or pitch in for site improvements that might reduce restoration costs.

“We are just wrapping another successful Lollapalooza where we hosted close to a half million music fans in Grant Park,” she said in an email. “We need some time to load out this week as well as put together the remediation plan with the Park District.
