\n\tIt looks like Jason Bourne<\/a> hasn\u2019t thrown his last punch at the studio he\u2019s called home for over two decades. Following an extensive auction, NBCUniversal<\/a> has acquired all\u00a0rights, excluding publishing, to Robert Ludlum<\/a>\u2019s revered\u00a0Jason\u00a0Bourne\u00a0and\u00a0Treadstone<\/a>\u00a0book series, in perpetuity, the company said Wednesday. The deal fortifies the future of the\u00a0Bourne\u00a0franchise across the NBCU universe, paving the way for new installments and a continued legacy for Ludlum\u2019s beloved character and the spy world he inhabits.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSince its debut in 2002, the iconic\u00a0Bourne\u00a0franchise has reshaped the spy genre with groundbreaking films that set\u00a0new standards for cinematic action,\u201d said Peter Cramer, President, Universal<\/a> Pictures.\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019re energized to continue expanding the\u00a0Bourne\u00a0universe into the future with exciting new\u00a0stories for global audiences.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tSources tell Deadline that the earlier this year, the Ludlum estate took the rights back out market after they had lapsed at the studio, with plans to hold an auction. WME ran point on the process and sources say there were seven offers in for rights, including two from streamers, one from another major studio and a few entrepreneurial ventures. After bringing the proposal back to Universal, the studio matched it with what insiders are describing as a \u201cvery large deal.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe are thrilled that the\u00a0Bourne\u00a0franchise will remain at Universal,\u201d said Jeffrey Weiner, Chairman & CEO of Captivate Entertainment and the executor of Ludlum\u2019s estate. \u201cWe look forward to working with the Universal team to expand the\u00a0Bourne\u00a0franchise across Universal\u2019s varied platforms.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWith this new agreement, longtime Universal collaborator and storied producer Frank Marshall will continue to shepherd forthcoming installments of the film series, as he has from the beginning, along with Captivate\u2019s\u00a0Jeffrey Weiner and Ben Smith. Captivate has managed the rights for the Ludlum estate since 2001.<\/p>\n

\n\tDeadline broke the news that Ed Berger would be coming on to develop a new Bourne film<\/a> with Matt Damon potentially returning to reprise his role. Insiders now say they have a script from Joe Barton, but as of now the film is not greenlit and remains in development.<\/p>\n

\n\tUniversal has released five\u00a0Bourne\u00a0films\u00a0in the critically acclaimed and commercially successful franchise, including four starring Damon:\u00a0The Bourne Identity, directed by Doug Liman; Paul Greengrass\u2019\u00a0The Bourne Supremacy,\u00a0The Bourne Ultimatum,\u00a0and\u00a0Jason Bourne; as well as the Jeremy Renner-starring spinoff\u00a0The Bourne Legacy, directed by Tony Gilroy.\u00a0The films have collectively grossed more than $1.64 billion at the global box office.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe franchise also reaches across the NBCUniversal enterprise with\u00a0Bourne-themed video games and merchandise, as well as a Universal Studios Orlando theme park activation \u201cThe Bourne Stuntactular.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe rights deal was brokered by WME, which represents Captivate. Some of the other authors the agency reps include Tom Clancy, Dan Brown, George R.R. Martin, Brandon Sanderson and Sarah J.
