{"id":802443,"date":"2026-08-04T13:32:10","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T13:32:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/802443\/"},"modified":"2026-08-04T13:32:10","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T13:32:10","slug":"mattias-grafstrom-tells-fifa-staff-individuals-come-and-go-in-wake-of-turmoil-of-gianni-infantino-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/802443\/","title":{"rendered":"Mattias Grafstrom tells FIFA staff \u2018individuals come and go\u2019 in wake of \u2018turmoil\u2019 of Gianni Infantino plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FIFA secretary-general Mattias Grafstrom has told staff at world football\u2019s governing body that \u201cindividuals, unstable moments and unfortunate episodes come and go\u201d as pressure mounts on Gianni Infantino following his failed FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) plan.<\/p>\n<p>Grafstrom is second in rank only to Infantino at the organisation and was yet to comment on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7485172\/2026\/08\/02\/fifa-world-cup-stake-sale-inside\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">what has unfolded over the last week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But in a letter sent to staff at FIFA on Tuesday morning, which has been seen by The Athletic, Grafstrom described the scrapped FFE plans as a \u201csad and reproachable series of events \u2014 which were thankfully concluded with the FFE project permanently abandoned\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Athletic has previously reported that Grafstrom was not aware of the FFE scheme, which had been drawn up by Infantino.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe last week has been both extraordinary and challenging for all the members of FIFA staff in our offices around the world,\u201d his internal memo to staff read. \u201cThis is why I wanted that you were the first ones to hear from me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have all been thrown into the middle of a turmoil, which is difficult to comprehend and accept.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI assure you that you as members of the administration, you will be defended and safeguarded from the political context we currently experience. You do not need to worry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndividuals, unstable moments and unfortunate episodes come and go. The institution, its mission and its responsibility towards world football continue, and that is why we should always keep our professionalism, sense of perspective and composure.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Although Grafstrom\u2019s comments were sent internally, he joins Kevin Lamour, FIFA\u2019s chief operating officer, in criticising the plans drawn up by Infantino.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement to the Associated Press last week, Lamour said staff at the organisation had been \u201cdeceived\u201d and described FFE as \u201cthe project of one person\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Infantino\u2019s senior advisor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7482493\/2026\/07\/31\/infantino-fifa-world-cup-plans-cordeiro\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Carlos Cordeiro also resigned last week<\/a> due to his opposition to the plans.<\/p>\n<p>Arsene Wenger, the former Arsenal manager and current chief of global football development at FIFA, has revealed he found out about Infantino\u2019s failed FFE proposal via the media and said the governing body\u2019s withdrawal from it was \u201cabsolutely necessary and beyond question\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe recent events at FIFA deserve some clarity from my side,\u201d a statement from Wenger, shared by FIFA, read. \u201cI was not involved in this strategic plan and first became aware of the project through media reports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe decision to withdraw the project was absolutely necessary and beyond question, because I firmly believe in an independent FIFA that serves our game with commitment, transparency, and integrity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UEFA, European football\u2019s governing body, has called for Infantino to go, saying it has lost confidence in his leadership, while the English Football Association is set to follow the Football Association of Wales and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7488445\/2026\/08\/03\/gianni-infantino-fifa-support-fa\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">withdraw their letter of support for Infantino\u2019s re-election next year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>FIFA has been approached for comment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"FIFA secretary-general Mattias Grafstrom has told staff at world football\u2019s governing body that \u201cindividuals, unstable moments and unfortunate&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":802444,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[35],"tags":[113962,6090,403,99,1794],"class_list":["post-802443","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-sports","tag-fifa-mens-world-cup","tag-international-football","tag-soccer","tag-sports","tag-sports-business"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/802443","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=802443"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/802443\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/802444"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=802443"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=802443"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=802443"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
