DNR investigates rise in beaver attacks at Cunningham Falls State Park following new attack<\/p>\n

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources announced new closures at Cunningham Falls State Park around Hunting Creek Lake after a second teenager was bitten by a beaver Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n

According to DNR, a 19-year-old fisherman was bitten on the leg by a beaver in the South Beach Day area of the park. Authorities said the incident occurred around 9:30 a.m.<\/p>\n

The teenager appeared to have sustained a bite to the ankle and drove himself to Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown for treatment.<\/p>\n

This is the second incident in the park in recent weeks involving beaver attacks.<\/p>\n

On July 26, a 13-year-old boy was flown to a Baltimore hospital after he was bitten by a beaver<\/a> at Cunningham Falls State Park. The department later said the beaver tested positive for rabies.<\/a><\/p>\n

The beaver involved in Wednesday’s attack has been captured and euthanized to facilitate testing for rabies. <\/p>\n

In response to the second attack, DNR closed the Houck Day Use Area, the adjacent boat ramp and Big Hunting Creek above the lake as it investigates “a possible rabies outbreak within the local beaver population.”<\/p>\n

DNR said it will institute nighttime monitoring at the lake to remove additional beavers. The department said beaver attacks are rare and the last recorded instance of beaver bites in the state occured in 2021 and 2015.<\/p>\n
