{"id":804745,"date":"2026-08-06T15:48:13","date_gmt":"2026-08-06T15:48:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/804745\/"},"modified":"2026-08-06T15:48:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-06T15:48:13","slug":"health-workers-protest-in-bunia-over-unpaid-wages-amid-ebola-outbreak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/804745\/","title":{"rendered":"Health workers protest in Bunia over unpaid wages amid Ebola outbreak"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BUNIA, Congo (AP) \u2014 Dozens of Congolese health workers at the epicenter of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/ebola-virus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak<\/a> on record staged protests Thursday to demand payment for their wages, abandoning several health facilities even as aid workers warn that <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/congo-ebola-outbreak-ituri-tedros-tshisekedi-kinshasa-555dadc59c3a976974bb0e492c8ad524\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the disease<\/a> is still spreading at an alarming rate.<\/p>\n<p>Confirmed cases in the outbreak, meanwhile, reached 3,973, including 1,801 deaths, according to the government data as of Tuesday published on Thursday. It is the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ebola-outbreak-disease-health-congo-africa-f187db59b290ee4c6749872b54f8d735\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">second-largest Ebola outbreak on record<\/a>, behind the 2014-2016 West Africa outbreak that recorded more than 28,000 cases, including over 11,000 deaths.<\/p>\n<p>The health workers are protesting at the governor\u2019s office in Bunia, the capital of Ituri province, which accounts for <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/congo-ebola-outbreak-dispatch-10a0c2ea31cb66f06414bc8b76ce60e2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nearly 90% of the Ebola cases<\/a> in the country. They are the latest group to walk off their jobs since protests over pay issues began weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p>The health workers, including nurses providing critical care to Ebola patients, said they haven\u2019t received wages and bonuses for their work <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ebola-congo-explainer-outbreak-health-0e482142cbc7b7f3da1c32fd115b49d6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fighting Ebola<\/a> since the outbreak was declared in mid-May in one of Congo\u2019s most remote and vulnerable areas <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ebola-outbreak-congo-who-africa-disease-80ce505825171f2babe389c50452a7be\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ravaged by rebel conflict<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith this way of managing things, Ebola will not end in this province. We ask the authorities to get involved at all levels so that a solution is found quickly,\u201d said Edouige Makosi, one of the protesters.<\/p>\n<p>Officials have in the past blamed logistical issues for the payment delays. Congolese authorities did not immediately respond to an inquiry for comments on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/congo-ebola-outbreak-health-workers-c0fa254aae429c6b2eb09d62527d6cca\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Poor welfare for frontline workers<\/a> has been a key source of concern in the outbreak. Apart from the payment issues, many health workers and facilities have been attacked by rebels and angry mobs.<\/p>\n<p>During his visit to Congo on Wednesday, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged authorities to prioritize care and support for the responders.<\/p>\n<p>The medical charity Doctors Without Borders said this week that the outbreak is still \u201cspreading at an alarming and unprecedented rate\u201d and that the response which has been expanding with more steps \u201cis still not reaching communities quickly enough to break transmission chains.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Government data shows 674 patients are currently in isolation, most of them in Ituri.<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"html-embed-module-a00000\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n    Sign up for Morning Wire:<br \/>\n    Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day.\n  <\/p>\n<p>At least 75% of contacts being traced after their exposure to patients, the data showed.
