Ever since forming in the shadows of Linda Ronstadt\u2019s spotlight in 1971, the Eagles<\/a> have remained the world\u2019s least mysterious mystery.\u00a0<\/p>\n They are the only act with two records that rank in the ten best-selling albums of all time list, and yet there has never been a firm consensus regarding whether their name is prefixed with \u2018the\u2019 or they\u2019re simply Eagles. The consensus on whether they\u2019re America\u2019s defining rock band <\/a>or a middle-of-the-road aberration is even more hotly contested.<\/p>\n The band seemed to typify the 1970s<\/a>, but what exactly they embodied beyond the \u2018country rock forefathers\u2019 tag that often befalls them remains unclear. Hell, even the meaning behind their biggest hit, \u2018Hotel California\u2019, is as obfuscated as they come, and the track weirdly took two months before it hit the top of the charts for a solitary week before going on to be one of the biggest songs of all time.<\/p>\n You picture them on the dusty fringes of the desert, but Don Henley also claimed, \u201cI think our songs have more to do with the streets than Bruce Springsteen\u2019s<\/a>\u201d. So, are they desperados at dusk or suburbanites under streetlights?<\/p>\n Even the band itself failed to agree on many things. This left the firm buddies squabbling and eventually embarking on an onstage brawl that brought things to a bitter end. But during that time, they achieved great things beyond their commercial acclaim. Bob Dylan saying that \u2018Pretty Maids All in a Row\u2019 \u201ccould be one of the best songs ever\u201d is an achievement enough, though.<\/p>\n However, anyone about to conclude that perhaps this upheaval injected a degree of magic into their mix is set to be upended by Joe Walsh\u2019s favourite song by the band. The 1977 track was a product of a rare moment of harmony. As it happens, it is partly this harmonious origin story that endears the song to Walsh, a man who has more than a few regrets over how things in the band unfurled.<\/p>\n The tale of \u2018Life in the Fast Lane\u2019<\/p>\n Often, for artists, it can be hard to separate the inception of the song from the end result. When it comes to Walsh\u2019s favourite during his time in the band, the backstory provides a rare moment of brotherly warmth amid a swathe of brotherly bickering. \u201cWe were looking for input from me \u2013 Joe Walsh, rocker \u2013 that could be the foundation for an Eagles song<\/a>,\u201d he told Rolling Stone. \u201cWe had a couple false starts on stuff and hadn\u2019t really found anything.\u201d<\/p>\n Further reading: From The Vault<\/p>\n \u201cBut one night, I was in my dressing room getting ready for a show, and I had this one lick I\u2019d play over and over as part of warming up,\u201d he continued. <\/p>\n \u201cBecause it\u2019s really a hard lick to play. And that\u2019s \u2018Life in the Fast Lane\u2019,\u201d he recalled. At that moment, Henley entered the room agog and demanded that they make it into an Eagles song right away. He was fired up with inspiration from the get-go, and they pretty much worked it into an anthem on the spot.<\/p>\n \u201cSo it\u2019s a Walsh\/Henley\/Frey tune, and I\u2019m really proud of it,\u201d Walsh humbly concluded. With a bluesy, muscular riff, the story that they wove the fine guitar work into fit perfectly in the Eagles\u2019 narrative<\/a>. Henley has said that on every Eagles album there is a comment on \u201cthe myth-making that is the American Dream\u201d. Well, with \u2018Life in the Fast Lane\u2019, with fame assured, they approach that from the other side.<\/p>\n The searing anthem looks at what happens after you\u2019ve \u2018made it\u2019, and the myth involved with that. It\u2019s a portrait of wealth, drugs, sex and excess that never glamorises its subjects. Coupled with the grit of earthy sound, it was the perfect retort to the mounting criticism that the group were \u2018too perfect\u2019 in every way by critics who were having their heads turned by punk.<\/p>\n
