Found primarily in warm, coastal waters, it can cause serious, potentially life-threatening infections when contaminated seawater enters an open wound, according to the CDC.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_258713\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/travel\/deadly-bacteria-found-waters-near-luxury-vacation-destination-ahead-summer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">DEADLY BACTERIA FOUND IN WATERS NEAR LUXURY VACATION DESTINATION AHEAD OF SUMMER<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Infections can also occur when someone eats <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_258714\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/infectious-disease\/foodborne-illness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">raw or undercooked shellfish<\/a>, especially oysters.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">The Louisiana Department of Health has reported nine cases and five deaths so far this year. (Allison Joyce \/ AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Initial signs and symptoms of a Vibrio skin infection include fever, redness, pain, swelling, warmth, discoloration and discharge, per the CDC.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">While <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_258717\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">healthy people<\/a> generally experience only mild symptoms, those who are immunocompromised or have chronic liver disease can face serious health risks.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/newsletters?cmpid=fnfirstnl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTER<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">If Vibrio vulnificus enters the bloodstream, it can cause <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_258719\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/infectious-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">advanced illness<\/a> marked by fever, chills, septic shock and blistering skin lesions.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Some severe cases can cause an infection called necrotizing fasciitis, which is when the flesh around an open wound dies, the CDC cautions. This rare side effect has led to Vibrio vulnificus being described as &#8220;flesh-eating bacteria.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Diagnosis and treatment<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">The bacterial infection is diagnosed by testing cultures obtained from stool, wounds or blood, according to health officials.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">For mild infections, the CDC recommends increasing fluid intake to prevent dehydration.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Those with severe or prolonged infections should <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_258720\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/healthy-living\/medications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">receive antibiotics<\/a> to improve survival rates.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/person-hospitalized-fungal-outbreak.jpg\" alt=\"Person hospitalized - fungal outbreak\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Those with severe or prolonged infections should receive antibiotics to improve survival rates.
