This year, it celebrated its 100th anniversary and announced plans to expand its west wing — an expansion it’s still pursuing, recently starting the design phase.

The staff cuts come amid uncertainty for the future of arts and culture funding throughout the region and nationwide, with federal grant funding being particularly hard-hit.

Locally, San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria proposed slashing $11.8 million of the city’s $13.8 million budget for arts and culture earlier this year — though $10 million was ultimately restored in the final budget following public outcry, with support from the Prebys Foundation.

Also this spring, county supervisors responded to the sector’s funding woes by advancing an effort to steer $2.75 million to grants and other programs for the arts.

It’s also been just a little over a year since the Trump administration moved to slash billions of dollars in grant funding for nonprofits across the country, including for arts and culture, in a push to pull support for efforts believed to advance diversity, equity and inclusion.

The San Diego Museum of Art hasn’t been immune to these funding losses.

In fiscal 2024, the museum was awarded $350,000 from the National Endowment for the Humanities, but it didn’t receive the final $100,000 of the award after the grant was canceled in spring 2025, Kovach said.

It got a $25,000 federal grant in fiscal 2025. It has gotten none since.

Other museums in Balboa Park have also felt the strain. The Museum of Us hasn’t had to make any layoffs, said James Haddan, the museum’s senior director of development and external communications.

But it has faced the whiplash of losing a federal grant only for it to be later restored. The museum’s nearly $250,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services was canceled last year but recently reinstated.

“It makes every year very concerning and stressful, to be honest,” he said.

The federal funding cuts have had “a very negative impact on the ability of those organizations to deliver their mission throughout the city and throughout the region,” said Peter Comiskey, executive director of the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership.

But Susanna Peredo Swap, the founder and executive director of the arts nonprofit Vanguard Culture, commends the arts institutions for continuing their work, despite the uncertainty around funding.

She says that while layoffs shouldn’t be celebrated, those at the San Diego Museum of Art are a “smart move” for the broader institution.

“Unfortunately, this had to happen, but they’re finding ways to maneuver to still stay strong, to still keep programming,” she said.

The San Diego Museum of Art laid off nearly a dozen employees Wednesday in what it described as…

[56
228,226,227,229,88,983,3,2628,2557
post-806243","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-arts-and-design","tag-arts","tag-arts-and-design","tag-artsanddesign","tag-design","tag-entertainment","tag-local-news","tag-news","tag-things-to-do","tag-top-stories-sdut
["GET
