The jobs report on Friday came in\u2026less than good, let\u2019s say. Are we back in this \u201cmeh-conomy,\u201d where we have stagnant job growth and uncomfortably high inflation with no easy solution? Those are two difficult jobs to tackle at once, right?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqho00053b6rxf1i3gnh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cJobs\u201d was not supposed to be a pun, but let\u2019s go with it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqho00063b6rwa676t27@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Matt Egan: Hey, Dave! I wish we were doing this under happier circumstances. Because, yes, it feels like we just got an economic plot twist no one wanted.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhp00083b6r57ms02hf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The thinking before Friday: Solid but not spectacular job market. The thinking now: Soft job market AND elevated inflation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhp00093b6rrdsd2fjj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Goldman: Right. I feel like not so long ago, we were talking about, \u201cThe economy is strong, but everyone hates it.\u201d Now, maybe sentiment and reality are\u202fsomewhat converging? Maybe?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhp000b3b6rd52nwi24@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Egan: Exactly. The surveys (many of which are dismissed by investors as overly political) may have sniffed out this labor market weakness before the hard data. Conference Board\u2019s labor market split (jobs plentiful vs jobs hard to get) = weakest since 2021.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhp000d3b6ru9i9uim0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But before we dive deeper, let\u2019s pause for one of those asterisks I know our audience loves to hate.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhp000e3b6rmdnpr19w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This was not just a soft jobs report. It was a messy one. And there is a very active debate happening as we speak over how much weight we should put on this report. How much of this is statistical noise vs economic reality? We\u2019ll find out soon enough.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhp000f3b6rqpf0caho@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Goldman: One month is way too little data to hang an economic theory on. The evidence is still pretty strong for an economy that\u2019s just \u201cfine\u201d if not \u201cpretty good\u201d: The economy grew at a 1.5% rate last quarter, inflation is only at 3.5% \u2014 not the 9+% it was at in 2022. Jobs have averaged solid-enough gains this year, February and July excepted. Retail sales are up for eight straight months.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhp000h3b6rg4vih3lc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But the Fed\u2019s got a big decision to make here in September. It sure seemed like it was on the path to rate hikes soon. But now if it hikes rates in a slowing job market, it could make the situation worse.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhp000i3b6rxo481d95@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Are you on \u201cTeam Warsh\u201d now?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhp000j3b6rt4gs7lvf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Egan\u202f: I\u2019m not going to tell Kevin Warsh how to do his very difficult job.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhp000l3b6r13lr2y76@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Goldman: That doesn\u2019t stop you from telling me how to do my job.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhp000n3b6rgvx3cway@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Egan:\u202fHa! Anytime I tell you how to do your job, I am sure to do it subtly and with plausible deniability.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhq000p3b6rrac0p0su@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Warsh is preaching patience on inflation. And that argument looks A) stronger than a few days ago; and B) more likely to win over his new colleagues.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhq000q3b6rxy5jlh89@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In other words, even if we acknowledge the July jobs report was a mess that only a toddler could make, the labor market looks weaker.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhq000r3b6ret5couh1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This jobs report was weak enough that it buys Warsh &amp; Co. the time that they may have been looking for.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhq000s3b6rqomgbblb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Goldman: So what about the argument that the Fed was lacking credibility? (That\u2019s Fedspeak for failing to back up its tough inflation stance with action.) Does that argument hold less or more water now?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhq000u3b6rxvimsggy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Egan: I think the Fed-has-a-credibility argument is a separate but related issue.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhq000w3b6r2y0qu75x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Goldman: Oh, interesting. How so?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhq000y3b6rja7z7771@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Egan: Fed watchers I talk to are not upset that Warsh is reluctant to hike. That\u2019s a totally reasonable stance. (Even more reasonable after the jobs report.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhq00113b6r71ixocz3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The issue isn\u2019t even that Warsh won\u2019t tell us what\u2019s going to come next. That\u2019s his philosophy. The real issue is that Warsh hasn\u2019t really told us what WOULD make him hike.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhq00123b6r3uhlqrgx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In Fedspeak, that\u2019s called the \u201creaction function.\u201d We gotta put our heads together with Phil Mattingly (our CNN colleague and fellow Fed watcher) and suggest a rebrand for that term.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhq00133b6rkmhx9cgl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Goldman: Phil would be an excellent marketing executive for the Fed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhr00153b6rl9015mop@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But I think Warsh was a lot more hawkish on inflation than folks might be giving him credit for. He said \u2014 defiantly \u2014 that the Fed wouldn\u2019t stop until it gets to 2% inflation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhr00163b6r26zpek2q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And he said the markets gave the Fed time to assess the economic situation, which might turn out to have been the correct course of action. Bond yields have remained pretty high in recent weeks, which acts as their own quasi-rate hike \u2014 without the Fed needing to put its foot down and accidentally step on the weaker-than-expected job market.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhr00173b6rq8fuyr5i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In other words: Warsh may not be playing 3D chess, but he knows what he\u2019s doing.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/gettyimages-2288203975a.JPG\" alt=\"Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh speaks during a news conference at Federal Reserve Headquarters in Washington, DC, on July 29.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1332\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhr00183b6rvlwkeqr8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Egan: So let\u2019s unpack that for a sec.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhr001a3b6rns7wk1c5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            1. Warsh is 100% talking tough on inflation. But the criticism from some economists is that he\u2019s not backing that up with action. (It doesn\u2019t need to be a hike, but a real commitment to hiking.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhr001b3b6r86ehlfca@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            2. Yes, the bond market is tapping the brakes that Warsh seems reluctant to talk about touching. But remember, it\u2019s not desirable to have the bond market do the Fed\u2019s job for it. It can be turbulent and at some point would raise concerns that the Fed is losing control.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhr001c3b6rqys0y64p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            3. The July jobs report was soft enough that it caused yields to go down, somewhat reducing that brake effect.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhr001d3b6rs1pmkxsr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Goldman: Here\u2019s the counterpoint, though\u2026\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhr001f3b6rbseq7qd6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Warsh\u2019s philosophy seems to be: The Fed will shut up and let the markets react not to what I\u2019m saying as much as what the economy dictates.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhr001g3b6rpuhf5jmf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In other words, if inflation is high, the bond market will send yields higher to counteract that.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhr001h3b6rbny96yid@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s not that the Fed is delegating its entire job to the bond market \u2014 just the opposite.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhr001i3b6rcgip5ovz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When the Fed suggests it\u2019s going to hike rates, the market reacts and then the Fed locks itself into that decision. If it doesn\u2019t hike after signaling it would, the market goes haywire.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhr001j3b6rc8sn0y3x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Imagine if Warsh had said, \u201cWe\u2019re leaning toward a hike next meeting.\u201d The bond market would probably be even higher now than it is. And the Fed, after seeing this mediocre jobs data, may have locked itself into a decision it no longer wanted to make.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhr001k3b6rjr77cixv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Egan: There\u2019s definitely a role for the bond market. But the Fed, not the bond market, calls the shots when it comes to short-term rates. That\u2019s literally what they do.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhs001m3b6rb8kcw94i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Goldman: Right. The Fed is the big boss in this video game.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhs001o3b6riihonzcu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Egan: Warsh had a colorful analogy at the July meeting about the market learning to \u201cplay the ball, not the referee.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhs001q3b6rozdph4l6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Made for great headlines and tweets. But the more I think about it, the less sense it makes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhs001r3b6r22jpwg73@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Referees are not active participants. The Fed is. I have no idea if my NY Jets are going to win their first game, but I 100% know the ref won\u2019t toss any passes to the tight end.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhs001s3b6rmd5g0ywf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Goldman: I think we all know that the Jets aren\u2019t going to win their first game, Matt.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhs001u3b6rptekpadn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Egan: (Though to be clear, my Jets have been bad for long enough that we\u2019ll take the help wherever we can get it.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhs001w3b6rcckcvqzy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            I\u2019d like to challenge you to put your money where your mouth is on that Jets prediction, but we\u2019ll keep it PG.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhs001x3b6r8p15oa7z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Goldman:\u202fThe two smartest things I heard after the Fed meeting were from our colleague Rachel Siegel, who said it\u2019s not that Warsh is being completely silent,  we just don\u2019t know how to speak his lingo yet.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjnakq100833b6r4sx7qreb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            I think that\u2019s right. And then the Wall Street Journal\u2019s Greg Ip noted the fun line about the Fed: If it mentions purple traffic cones, Wall Street will start counting purple traffic cones.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqht001z3b6r9y7vgyke@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At some point, Warsh and Wall Street will figure one another out.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqht00203b6rfaq8w2di@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Egan: Absolutely agree that there is a learning curve aspect to all of this.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqht00223b6rwxkjhwpa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There\u2019s a new guy in charge. Whenever that happens, there are bumps along the way.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqht00233b6rtqrax7kh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Goldman: Totally.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/gettyimages-2264300561.jpg\" alt=\"The New York Stock Exchange on March 5.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2001\" width=\"3000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjnczae008k3b6renz4evv9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Egan: Ben Bernanke, Janet Yellen and Jerome Powell \u2014 Warsh\u2019s three predecessors \u2014 spoke a different language. And they told Wall Street more or less where they thought the ball was going.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqht00273b6rl4vyzen4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Warsh doesn\u2019t think that\u2019s smart, because Fed and consensus forecasts have often been wrong.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqht002a3b6r1znx64c1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But just because Warsh doesn\u2019t want to tip his hand, doesn\u2019t mean the market will stop trying to guess it. That\u2019s Greg Ip\u2019s point. And so the bond market moves are NOT just reflecting economic reality. They\u2019re also reflecting what investors think Warsh will do next,\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhu002b3b6rbxu35kxj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Goldman:\u202fAgreed. They\u2019re playing the same game they always do. They just don\u2019t like the messenger right now.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhu002d3b6r3claubbr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But just because Wall Street grew comfortable with Bernanke, Yellen and Powell, doesn\u2019t mean Warsh is doing it wrong.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhu002e3b6r5cnr9mzm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Egan: 100%. Imagine if Bernanke was solely judged by his infamous 2007 quote that subprime is well contained. Or Yellen only judged on the taper tantrum when she started. Or Powell on his belated response to post-Covid inflation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhu002g3b6rx2szo0bl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Goldman: Right! Meanwhile, this is getting painful for Americans: mortgage rates, which were sinking below 6% earlier this year, are now getting closer to 7% as rates keep moving higher. That\u2019s gotta be on the Fed\u2019s mind, right?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhu002j3b6rwrd70zeb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Egan: It\u2019s such a rough time for young people who want to buy a home. A one-two punch of high prices and high (and rising) borrowing costs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhu002l3b6rk791dtcv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And higher rates will make it even more expensive for wannabe first-time buyers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhu002m3b6rc368txzi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s way too early to say Warsh is doing right or wrong. But there is the risk that his strategy will backfire by confusing investors.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhv002n3b6rsx2358ji@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And I know few who will lose sleep over some frustrated fixed-income traders. But there are real-world consequences if confusion over Fed policy causes severe turbulence in markets.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhv002o3b6r1at2bw6g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Goldman: Well, the next meeting will be incredibly consequential.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhv002q3b6rjwzc1jxc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And if we take Warsh at his word, which I argue we should (he deserves the benefit of the doubt), he believes his strategy is in the best interest of the American people.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhv002r3b6r0r8df6dg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Egan:\u202fThe next Fed meeting, as of now, is A) Live (a rate hike is in play); and B) A toss-up right now \u2014 50\/50 odds of a hike.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhv002t3b6rb7ie5ezn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yes, on giving Warsh the benefit of the doubt. Here\u2019s how I\u2019d frame it: Warsh is very savvy. It\u2019s not lost on him that he is basically unfireable, and he\u2019s got a legacy to protect.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjmgqhv002u3b6rkfz2u5ff@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Goldman:\u202f\u202fRight. I\u2019m just glad I\u2019m not him. He\u2019s got the worst job in the country now.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsjnoat500aw3b6rfa165d7z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Egan:\u202f\u202fCareful what you wish for. \u201cChairman (or Chair?)
