The singer had gotten divorced, and what followed were relationships with models like Elle MacPherson and Christie Brinkley.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tVideos by American Songwriter\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe song was originally called \u2018Uptown Girls\u2019 not \u2018Uptown Girl\u2019,\u201d Joel explained once, as shared by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/billy-joel\/uptown-girl\" id=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/billy-joel\/uptown-girl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Songfacts<\/a>. \u201cI know its associated with Christie but when I started to write that song I had recently divorced prior to meeting her, all of the sudden I\u2019m a rock star and divorced. The pair met in 1977, were married at one point, and then divorced in 1984. In the 80s, they dated for a bit after their divorce. In the quote below from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/simon-garfunkel\/the-sound-of-silence\" id=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/simon-garfunkel\/the-sound-of-silence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Songfacts<\/a>, Simon compares \u201cHearts And Bones\u201d to his massive Simon and Garfunkel hit, \u201cThe Sound of Silence\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cI wrote \u2018The Sound of Silence\u2019 when I was 21 and \u2018Hearts And Bones\u2019 is, I think, a better song,\u201d he told Bruce Pollock in 1986. \u201cBut \u2018Sounds Of Silence\u2019 was a big hit and it\u2019s in the culture. When you talk about a popular art, as the writing gets more complex and more layered, it\u2019s harder to have a lot of people who really like it.
