{"id":807590,"date":"2026-08-09T05:24:15","date_gmt":"2026-08-09T05:24:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/807590\/"},"modified":"2026-08-09T05:24:15","modified_gmt":"2026-08-09T05:24:15","slug":"this-will-be-the-biggest-and-leanest-team-weve-had-matt-rhule-on-nus-physicality-through-one-week-of-fall-camp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/807590\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;This Will Be the Biggest and Leanest Team We&#8217;ve Had&#8217;: Matt Rhule on NU&#8217;s Physicality Through One Week of Fall Camp"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"inline-text-0\" class=\"mt-[18px] md:mt-0 mb-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"78\">The Huskers didn&#8217;t spend the offseason sitting still.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7b\">Instead, head coach Matt Rhule told reporters Saturday that the fourth iteration of his Nebraska roster is noticeably more physically imposing than it was before.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7e\">Set to go up against what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college\/nebraska\/football\/espn-releases-win-probabilities-for-every-nebraska-football-game-in-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ESPN&#8217;s FPI metric<\/a> regards as the No. 21 most difficult schedule in college football this fall, that&#8217;s a very good thing.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7h\">However, he shed light on much more than just that. Rhule and company looked to address both areas before the fall.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"81\">\u201cThis offseason we added 677 pounds of lean mass,\u201d said Rhule. \u201cAt the same time, they lost 188 pounds, as a team, of fat. This will be the biggest and leanest team we\u2019ve had.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"84\">In the grown man&#8217;s game that is Big Ten football, that should be a good thing for the Big Red. Even so, Rhule suggested they&#8217;ll still have to prove it this fall.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-9\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"87\">\u201cThey\u2019ve been great in the weight room, great in the training table, and great in the classroom,\u201d he said. \u201cNow, they\u2019ve got to take that mindset and transfer it over to the football field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1786253052_744_01kkex4cjwvm3bk1q5pc.jpg\" alt=\"Rob Aurich defensive coordinator 2026-03-10 Nebraska football practice \" title=\"Rob Aurich defensive coordinator 2026-03-10 Nebraska football practice \" width=\"360\" height=\"240\" class=\"undefined w-full w-full blur-[5px]\" q:id=\"8h\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Defensive coordinator Rob Aurich during a practice in early March. | Kenny Larabee, KLIN<\/p>\n<p>The Challenge of Implementing a New Defensive Scheme<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-12\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8o\">Nebraska added former San Diego State defensive coordinator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college\/nebraska\/football\/nebraska-adds-san-diego-state-s-rob-aurich-as-next-defensive-coordinator-2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rob Aurich<\/a> over the offseason, who&#8217;s fresh off a 2025 campaign in which his Aztecs ranked as the No. 11 unit in the FBS.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-13\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8r\">However, he&#8217;s implementing a new defensive scheme. Instead of the Huskers&#8217; 3-3-5, the one they&#8217;ve run for the last three years, Aurich is bringing a four-down defensive front to the table for the Big Red.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-14\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8u\">Asked about the adjustment, Rhule didn&#8217;t view it as such.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-15\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8x\">\u201cThere\u2019s been no adjustment,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s a change, but there\u2019s really no adjustment, because we did so much of that. Earlier in the week, the former Houston and West Virginia head coach suggested he&#8217;d been frustrated with Nebraska&#8217;s tight end room in June.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-20\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"9k\">Rhule, when asked to add context to the subject, stated the group is back on schedule in his own eyes. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-21\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"9n\">\u201cI don\u2019t know what he meant,\u201d Rhule said. \u201cBut there were a couple of guys that got banged up in June. Some guys, for them to be good players, have to get out there and practice. So, I think there was probably some frustration there. But Luke (Lindenmeyer) is a proven commodity. Between the roster seemingly improving and the veteran nature of it all, he suggested there are several position groups with battles going on for eventual starting roles.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-25\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"a7\">\u201cI think the thing with our team right now is, there\u2019s enough battles at enough positions where if you\u2019re out for a week, you\u2019re going to get passed by,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s not a punishment. Danny, to me, has elite processing, has great accuracy, a great arm. He just had to physically grow up. He\u2019s doing that. Rhule suggested several of those who are not practicing were already banged up before the team got things going Wednesday.
