Michigan made two key additions on special teams this offseason via the transfer portal \u2014 kicker Trey Butkowski (Pitt) and Cam Brown (UNLV).<\/p>\n
Butkowski was 20-of-23 last season, going 6-of-9 from 40-49 yards out. Brown, a native of Australia, punted 22 times last season as a freshman, with a 42.9-yard average and long of 71 yards.<\/p>\n
Speaking with the media on Thursday, Michigan special teams coordinator Kerry Coombs spoke about Butkowski and Brown.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a guy who\u2019s done it, and we\u2019re going to go out there and roll with him,\u201d Coombs said of Butkowski.<\/p>\n
Coombs was impressed by Butkowski\u2019s accuracy despite playing in a windy home stadium environment at Pitt.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe wind blows there at all times. I\u2019ve learned we have some wind here, too. It it is a lot of wind, a lot of tough situations, and he kicked really well in that environment,\u201d Coombs said. \u201cI\u2019m excited about Trey and what he will add to our team.\u201d<\/p>\n
While Brown could be the frontrunner to start at punter, he will be competing with Hudson Hollenback, who averaged 43.2 yards on 40 puns last season, slightly better than Brown\u2019s 42.9.<\/p>\n
\u201cCam Brown had a good year at UNLV,\u201d Coombs said. \u201cI\u2019m very familiar with Australian kickers. I\u2019ve done it for a long time with those kids, and he\u2019s off to a great start.\u201d<\/p>\n
Coombs noted the rich history Michigan has with productive kickers and punters \u2014 something he hopes to see this fall.<\/p>\n
