This song, from The Beatles\u2019 Revolver album, takes inspiration from Paul McCartney<\/a>\u2018s relationship with Jane Asher, whom he dated for five years but didn\u2019t feel it was right to wed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a song about rejection,\u201d McCartney explained to The Lyrics<\/a>. \u201cThe breakup, or marking the end of a relationship that didn\u2019t work, has always been quite a rich area to explore in a song. Having been through it a few times\u00a0\u2013 as I suppose a lot of people have \u2013 it was an emotion I could relate to, and it seemed like a good idea to put into a song because probably a lot of other people could relate to it too\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Bob Dylan was inspired by his relationship with Suze Rotolo when he wrote this song. She moved to Italy to study at the University of Perugia and left him behind, but he puts a twist on their departure in this tune.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of people make it sort of a love song\u2014slow and easygoing,\u201d Dylan once said of this song, per Songfacts<\/a>. \u201cBut it isn\u2019t a love song. It\u2019s a statement that maybe you can say something to make yourself feel better. It\u2019s as if you were talking to yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

This song is about Joni Mitchell\u2019s first marriage to Chuck Mitchell, whom she would sometimes escape to coffee shops from to write. Mitchell has described their union as a \u201cmarriage of convenience.\u201d<\/p>\n

A champion of Mitchell\u2019s, Tom Rush, once said<\/a> of her first husband,\u00a0\u201cChuck was a good guy, but he didn\u2019t share the enthusiasm about her songwriting. He was more interested in sticking with the traditional folk stuff. She was more interested in creating new stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lyrics of \u201cI Had A King\u201d sing about two people that don\u2019t seem to be compatible, despite the love they may share.<\/p>\n
