Gold slipped on Monday as investors took
\nprofits after prices hit a seven-week high in the previous session, while
\nmarkets looked to U.S. inflation data for fresh clues on the Federal Reserve’s
\ninterest rate path.<\/p>\n
Spot gold was down 0.3% at $4,330.46 per
\nounce, as of 0443 GMT. Prices hit their highest since June 17 on Friday after
\nweak U.S. nonfarm payrolls data.<\/p>\n
“Gold is edging \u2060slightly lower as it
\nsuccumbs to some profit-taking following last week’s strong NFP-inspired gains.
\nThis looks like a natural stabilisation rather than a meaningful shift in
\nsentiment – I expect gold to remain supported above the $4,300 level in the
\nnear term,” said Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM Trade.<\/p>\n
Data showed the U.S. economy unexpectedly
\nshed jobs in July and previously reported job gains for the prior two months
\nwere revised sharply lower.<\/p>\n
Futures markets then flipped the odds of a
\nrate hike at the September 15-16 Federal Open Market Committee \u2060meeting from
\nlikelier-than-not to a worse-than-even chance.<\/p>\n
A lower interest rate environment boosts the
\nattractiveness of gold against income-generating assets, as bullion itself
\nearns no interest.<\/p>\n
Key U.S. data scheduled for release this
\nweek include the Consumer Price Index (CPI) on Wednesday and the Producer Price
\nIndex (PPI) on Thursday.<\/p>\n
“Soft readings would \u2060strengthen the
\ncase for a rate hold and clear a path for further upside in gold… Middle East
\nuncertainty remains a lingering risk factor, as any renewed escalation that
\ndrives oil prices up \u2060could quickly pressure the metal,” said Waterer.<\/p>\n
On the geopolitical front, Iran said it was
\nnearing a final pact with Oman defining new shipping lanes between them through
\nthe Strait of \u2060Hormuz but repeated that the U.S. must meet several conditions
\nbefore the strategic waterway is reopened.<\/p>\n
Spot silver rose 0.3% to $63.77 per ounce
\nand platinum gained 0.2% to $1,748.80, while palladium slipped 1% to $1,364.55.<\/p>\n
