The biggest moves of the NBA offseason are pretty much in the books, and teams around the league are already getting graded on how they handled their rosters, their cap sheets, and their draft boards. I’ll be honest, over the past several months, one thing I hear repeatedly from folks around Atlantic, Camden, and Gloucester Counties is some version of, “Why do I care what Utah did with a second-round pick?” Fair question. But if you live anywhere near the Ben Franklin Bridge, you know the answer starts and ends with one word: Philadelphia.

Why South Jersey Watches Every Move

Our region doesn’t have its own NBA franchise, but it might as well. The Sixers are practically a South Jersey team by osmosis. Drive through Runnemede, Deptford, or Vineland on a night the Sixers are playing a big game, and you’ll see the same jerseys hanging in bar windows and pickup trucks that you’d see in South Philly. That’s why offseason grading matters here. It’s not academic. It’s about whether the team so many of our neighbors have followed since childhood is building toward something or just running in place again.

This offseason has been a mixed bag across the league by most accounts, with some franchises making bold swings and others playing it conservative with their cap space. The teams that get high marks tend to share a few traits: they addressed a clear roster need, they didn’t overpay for name recognition, and they came away from the draft with a player who fits their timeline. The teams getting lower grades usually made a move for the sake of making a move, without a real plan behind it.

What Grading Season Means for Local Fans

Here’s the thing about these offseason report cards. They’re fun to argue over, but they’re also a pretty good predictor of what October and November are going to look like. Front offices that draft well and manage their cap space wisely tend to show up in the standings by Thanksgiving. That matters if you’re the kind of fan who’s already circling potential playoff matchups, or if you’re the type who likes to have a little skin in the game once the regular season tips off — and if that’s you, it’s worth checking out how the odds are shaping up around the league before the calendar turns to fall.

For South Jersey specifically, keep an eye on how the roster moves around the Sixers and their Eastern Conference rivals shake out. A strong offseason grade doesn’t guarantee a good season, but a poor one usually signals a franchise that’s punting on the near future. If you want to follow along as training camps open and these grades get put to the test, our LOCAL-NEWS Hub will keep tracking how it all plays out.

Either way, grab your popcorn. Preseason basketball talk in a house full of Eagles fans and Phillies diehards is always a good time.
