(Image credit: JAXA)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-fd5247d8-946c-11f1-b3d8-df3ef3efada2\">The two-stage H3 is the successor to Japan&#8217;s workhorse H-2A rocket, which <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/japan-launching-of-gosat-gw-on-50th-and-final-liftoff-of-the-h-2a-rocket\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/japan-launching-of-gosat-gw-on-50th-and-final-liftoff-of-the-h-2a-rocket\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/japan-launching-of-gosat-gw-on-50th-and-final-liftoff-of-the-h-2a-rocket\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">retired last year<\/a> after a total of 50 flights.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-fd5247d8-946c-11f1-b3d8-df3ef3efada2-1\">The H3 \u2014 which stands 187 feet or 207 feet (57 or 63 meters) tall, depending on what type of payload fairing it employs \u2014 debuted in March 2023 and has eight liftoffs under its belt to date.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>Two of those eight have been failures \u2014 the debut flight and the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/japanese-h3-rocket-fails-during-launch-of-navigation-satellite\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/japanese-h3-rocket-fails-during-launch-of-navigation-satellite\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/japanese-h3-rocket-fails-during-launch-of-navigation-satellite\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">launch of Michibiki 5<\/a> in December of last year. But the H3 has already bounced back from that latter anomaly, successfully delivering six satellites to orbit <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/japans-h3-rocket-bounces-back-from-failure-with-successful-return-to-flight-launch-carrying-6-satellites\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/japans-h3-rocket-bounces-back-from-failure-with-successful-return-to-flight-launch-carrying-6-satellites\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/japans-h3-rocket-bounces-back-from-failure-with-successful-return-to-flight-launch-carrying-6-satellites\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on June 11<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-fd5248b4-946c-11f1-9305-ef1933984c9c\">Michibiki 7 will be part of Japan&#8217;s Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS), a homegrown navigation system that operates high above Earth in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29222-geosynchronous-orbit.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29222-geosynchronous-orbit.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29222-geosynchronous-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">geosynchronous orbit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This system is compatible with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/gps-what-is-it\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/gps-what-is-it\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/gps-what-is-it\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GPS satellites<\/a> and can be utilized with them in an integrated fashion,&#8221; Japanese officials wrote in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/qzss.go.jp\/en\/overview\/services\/sv02_why.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/qzss.go.jp\/en\/overview\/services\/sv02_why.html\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">description of the QZSS project<\/a>. &#8220;QZSS can be used even in the Asia-Oceania regions with longitudes close to Japan, so its usage will be expanded to other countries in these regions as well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The QZSS network will eventually consist of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gpsworld.com\/the-status-of-qzss\/#:~:text=On%20June%2012%2C%202024%2C%20the%20National%20Space,2030s.%20Figure%201%20System%20expansion%20of%20QZSS.\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.gpsworld.com\/the-status-of-qzss\/#:~:text=On%20June%2012%2C%202024%2C%20the%20National%20Space,2030s.%20Figure%201%20System%20expansion%20of%20QZSS.\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">11 satellites<\/a>, if all goes according to plan. There are five such spacecraft operating in orbit at the moment.<\/p>\n<p>Michibiki 7 is carrying a payload for the United States as well \u2014 the Situational Awareness Camera Hosted Instrument (S\u00c3CHI), which was developed for the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/us-space-force-history-mission-capabilities\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/us-space-force-history-mission-capabilities\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/us-space-force-history-mission-capabilities\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Space Force<\/a> by the MIT Lincoln Laboratory. This will be the second of two SACHIs to go up on a QZSS satellite; Michibiki 6, which launched atop an H3 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/japan-h3-rocket-launch-michibiki-6-navigation-satellite\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/japan-h3-rocket-launch-michibiki-6-navigation-satellite\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/japan-h3-rocket-launch-michibiki-6-navigation-satellite\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in February 2025<\/a>, hosts the other one.
