Former Auburn men\u2019s basketball standout and NBA first-round draft pick Wesley Person will take over as the next head coach at Wilcox Central, the school announced on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
This will mark another return to the state for Person, who is a graduate of Brantley High School.<\/p>\n
Along with previously serving as the head coach at Greenville High and the DME High School (Fla.) regional team, he was announced as the head coach at Samuel Wolfson School for Advanced Studies in Jacksonville, Fla., on May 27.<\/p>\n
He also spent time as the head coach of Enterprise State Community College\u2019s girls basketball team.<\/p>\n
Known for his 3-point shooting, Person had an illustrious college basketball career at Auburn that saw him earn multiple All-SEC accolades and his No. 11 eventually retired by the program.<\/p>\n
He averaged a career 19.1 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists with the Tigers, ranking second in program history in career 3-pointers made (262), third in total points (2,066) and fourth in career scoring average (19.1 PPG) before being drafted by the Phoenix Suns 23rd overall in the 1994 NBA draft.<\/p>\n
Person played 11 years in the NBA with the Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers, Memphis Grizzlies, Portland Trail Blazers, Atlanta Hawks and Miami Heat before his final NBA season in 2005 with the Denver Nuggets.<\/p>\n
The Auburn alum averaged 11.2 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game across his NBA career.<\/p>\n
