Just how good will the Notre Dame wide receiver room be going into 2026? The early Fall camp returns are slightly unsettling. <\/p>\n

All offseason, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish wide receiver room has been one of the most exciting talking points surrounding head coach Marcus Freeman\u2019s<\/a> 2026 roster. <\/p>\n

The depth, the new additions, the upside of the young talent already on campus. It all pointed toward a position group ready to take a massive step. But after a few days of fall practice, the early feedback has me admittedly a little bit uneasy about how close this group is to reaching the ceiling so many of us projected.<\/p>\n

Let me be clear: I still think this wide receiver room is going to be good. It could end up being great. But the path to getting there might look a lot different than I originally anticipated.<\/p>\n

The offseason optimism was real<\/p>\n

Notre Dame entered fall camp with a wide receiver depth chart that looked the best it has in years. <\/p>\n

Senior Jordan Faison<\/a> returns as the team\u2019s leading receiver from last season. Jaden Greathouse<\/a>, when healthy, has proven he can be a productive player against top-tier competition. <\/p>\n

The Fighting Irish added two former five-star recruits from Ohio State through the transfer portal in Mylan Graham<\/a> and Quincy Porter<\/a>. Behind them, you have younger players like redshirt sophomore Cam Williams, Micah Gilbert competing at boundary, and a freshman class headlined by Bubba Frazier, Devin Fitzgerald, and my personal favorite, Kaydon Findley.<\/p>\n

When you pair all of that with quarterback CJ Carr<\/a> returning for his redshirt sophomore season, you feel great about what this passing attack could become. Carr showed last year that he could push the ball downfield. His yards per completion and yards per attempt were sky-high, and he profited off a dynamic run game while still generating chunk plays. <\/p>\n

The expectation was that an upgraded wide receiver room would only accentuate those strengths.<\/p>\n

What the early returns are showing<\/p>\n

What I was hoping to hear out of the first few days of camp was that Graham was dominating again, just like he did in the spring. That Williams was continuing to trend upward. That Porter was back healthy and ready to be an impact player at boundary. That maybe one of the freshmen was showcasing NFL-level readiness sooner than expected.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not that any of those players have been bad, necessarily. But I have just been a little uneasy with the feedback coming out of the wide receiver room to start fall camp.<\/p>\n

Graham, who was a star in the spring, has been running with the 2s behind Greathouse in the slot. There will be a rotation there, and that\u2019s fine. But I\u2019m just not hearing his name as much as I thought I would. I expected to see that continuation and ascension from him as a potential difference-maker.<\/p>\n

Porter is still working back to full health. I am sky-high on his potential, and if he\u2019s able to get right, the competition between him and Gilbert at boundary has a chance to be a really nice duo. Porter has the traits and projection where you\u2019re going to bet on that upside all day. <\/p>\n

Unfortunately, he\u2019s been limited, so there just hasn\u2019t been enough to evaluate.<\/p>\n

Williams is getting mixed reviews. Some days on, some days off. That has been the book on Williams since he set foot in South Bend. The talent has always been there, but whether he can finally ascend to being \u201cthat guy\u201d in the wide receiver room remains an open question. I hope it happens. I\u2019m just not sure it will.<\/p>\n

Matt Jeffery\u2019s rise and what it signals<\/p>\n

The name generating the most buzz right now is Matt Jeffery, and I mean no disrespect at all. It\u2019s great that he\u2019s having a strong offseason and carrying that into fall camp. Jeffrey is following the Jordan Faison arc as a lacrosse player who had to earn his keep on the football field, and he\u2019s making plays. <\/p>\n

But I didn\u2019t expect to reach this point in camp with Jeffrey as the wide receiver we\u2019re talking most about while the conversation around Graham, Porter, and Williams remains relatively quiet.<\/p>\n

I feel good about the floor of this room. I feel fine about where everything stands. But I want to be able to hope for that ceiling, something that has been missing with this Notre Dame wide receiver room in recent years. <\/p>\n

Why the ceiling matters for Notre Dame\u2019s 2026 title hopes<\/p>\n

The running back room this year projects as good to potentially very good, but it\u2019s not going to be what Jeremiyah Love<\/a> and Jadarian Price<\/a> were a season ago. <\/p>\n

That means the supplement has to come from the passing game. The wide receiver room and quarterback room need to be better. You expect Carr to take a step, but you\u2019re hoping some of these young, talented receivers begin to really trend upward so the Notre Dame passing attack ends up being dynamic.<\/p>\n

This is also a significant stretch for wide receiver coach Mike Brown. I think he\u2019s a good coach, but if the younger, more talented players on this roster are not the ones making the biggest leaps for what is now the second consecutive offseason, there comes a point where you have to ask: with all this talent in the room, when do we start to see the fruits of that labor? When do the young, highly recruited players become the guys?<\/p>\n

Notre Dame\u2019s wide receiver room is going to be good regardless. But without it being very good or potentially excellent, a national championship in 2026 becomes a harder climb. <\/p>\n

Over the next couple of weeks, my eyes will be firmly on the wide receiver notes coming out of camp. I want to see those young, talented players start to get their footing and trend upward. The early returns have me slightly uneasy, but Notre Dame has plenty of time to prove that worry wrong.<\/p>\n
