More also went into serious delinquency \u2013 or 90 days late or more \u2013 on their car payments during the same time period than at any quarter since 2010.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsotjy9u00b03j6se4xsbnbi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, the latest data underscored how this is not a one-size-fits-all economy: Most people, by and large, are not letting their debt get too unwieldy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsoua20v00cu3j6su2i3ex8b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            New York Fed researchers noted that overall delinquency rates are elevated from where they were pre-pandemic, but that they\u2019re holding fairly stable and not deteriorating to where they were during the Great Financial Crisis or its immediate aftermath.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsou79d600cd3j6sgpz3drji@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Tuesday\u2019s report is the latest piece in a trove of data that highlights the mixed experiences that people are facing in the American economy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsou7tp800cg3j6s3evxpeqc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou really do have a lot of people who are doing just fine and spending because they feel good, and they\u2019re secure in their jobs,\u201d Matt Schulz, consumer finance analyst for LendingTree, told CNN. \u201cBut then you have an awful lot of people who are really struggling and really nervous because of high prices and a challenging job market.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsot7ii400983j6s6zko7wli@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The jump in auto loan debt is a warning sign, he said, especially with gas prices surging in recent months,\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsota4ei009m3j6svcvkacfg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s no surprise that auto loan delinquencies are creeping higher, but it is still concerning,\u201d he said. \u201cPeople generally don\u2019t stop paying their auto loan until they\u2019re under real financial pressure. For many Americans, their car is what gets them to work and keeps their daily lives moving.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsoumj9500d43j6sj6cqu1uy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Tuesday\u2019s report is the latest piece in a trove of data that highlights the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/08\/10\/business\/k-shaped-economy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mixed experiences that people are facing in today\u2019s economy<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsova1ei00di3j6squ0a9wfm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The US economy is growing; unemployment remains low; and the gargantuan interest and investment in artificial intelligence has served as rocket fuel for stocks and wealth for a good share of Americans.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsovac3100dl3j6s6s0jl3yn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, the economic expansion masks widening inequities.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsovl16600er3j6svlyccb25@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Five-plus years of higher-than normal inflation has compounded the cost of living, especially for those who can afford it the least. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/08\/07\/economy\/us-jobs-report-july\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Job growth has been sluggish<\/a> for most industries. And after the war in Iran sent gas prices higher, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/07\/13\/economy\/inflation-prices\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">inflation<\/a> is now fully eating away workers\u2019 paychecks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsovay2f00dr3j6srm8eoxwt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            New York Fed researchers said Tuesday that the latest quarterly data \u201cstill reflects this K-shaped economy\u201d where outcomes of higher-wealth individuals diverge greatly from lower-wealth Americans.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsovebfu00ed3j6s7r9zyll9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere are a lot of households who live paycheck to paycheck, and it just needs like one thing to happen to them that could lead to a delinquency,\u201d the researchers said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsorfwma005i3j6s86fjhq3v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Overall US household debt balances edged down by $13 billion, or 0.1%, to $18.8 trillion during the second quarter. However, the decline is largely an artifact of a quirk in how mortgage loans were recorded during the quarter, researchers noted.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsorjkl700613j6so193hrtx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mortgage loan balances\u2019 $74 billion decline during the quarter was attributed to a \u201cservicer transfer gap\u201d of delayed credit reporting when a mortgage is transferred from one servicer to another. This is likely to be reversed next quarter, New York Fed researchers said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsornb8a006f3j6sd084ex1f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If it wasn\u2019t for those gaps, mortgage balances would have remained flat for the quarter (which would have resulted in overall debt balances increasing by $61 billion, or 0.3%). Outside of mortgages, most balances increased across the major credit categories of home equity, student, auto, credit card and personal.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsoke9pm00193j6szb746kb1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Higher debt balances \u2013 even record-high ones \u2013 are to be expected. For one, the New York Fed data is not adjusted for inflation (and we\u2019ve seen faster-than-normal price hikes for five years running). But those balances also can increase because of factors such as population growth, e-commerce activity and economic conditions that help power consumer spending.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsow9ec300fb3j6so7ld3bla@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For example, there were a record-high $211 billion in new auto loans that appeared on Americans\u2019 credit reports during the second quarter.
