Both benchmarks settled<br \/>\nmore than $1 higher on Tuesday, marking their highest closes since July 31 and \u200bextending gains after jumping about 5% on<br \/>\nMonday.<\/p>\n<p>Spot gold gained 0.46%<br \/>\nto $4,387.03 an ounce. MSCI&#8217;s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside<br \/>\nJapan (.MIAPJ0000PUS), opens new tab was up 0.5%, while Japan&#8217;s \u200bbenchmark Nikkei share gauge (.N225), opens new<br \/>\ntab traded flat as the market reopened after a holiday.<\/p>\n<p>Four crew members of<br \/>\nan Egyptian-owned ship were killed in an attack by Houthis on Tuesday, Yemen&#8217;s<br \/>\ntransport ministry said, while the U.S. military said it struck a container<br \/>\nship attempting to sail toward an Iranian port. The fatalities would mark the first<br \/>\nfrom a Houthi strike \u200bon<br \/>\nshipping since the Iran war began on February 28.<\/p>\n<p>The war shows no signs<br \/>\nof ending despite repeated claims from U.S. President Donald Trump \u200bof an imminent deal.<\/p>\n<p>A North Korean<br \/>\nballistic missile fired off the Korean Peninsula&#8217;s east coast came days ahead<br \/>\nof major joint military exercises by Seoul and Washington long \u200cdenounced by \u2060Pyongyang. Meanwhile, Taiwan condemned planned<br \/>\nnaval drills between China and an Indonesian warship off the island&#8217;s east<br \/>\ncoast.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday&#8217;s CPI data<br \/>\nwill not capture the most recent rise in energy costs, but it could still prove<br \/>\ninstrumental in setting expectations for the Fed&#8217;s meeting next month, with<br \/>\nmoney markets showing an even chance of a hike .<\/p>\n<p>Consumer prices are<br \/>\nexpected to edge up 0.1% in July after falling 0.4% in June, according to a<br \/>\nReuters poll. Annual CPI inflation \u200bis<br \/>\nforecast to slow to 3.4% from \u200b3.5% a<br \/>\nmonth earlier.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Everyone&#8217;s got \u2060their eyes on the CPI report,&#8221; Skye<br \/>\nMasters, head of markets research at National Australia Bank, said on a<br \/>\npodcast. &#8220;If you do see the print coming in at zero, I think you&#8217;ll<br \/>\nobviously see a reasonable rally in \u200bTreasuries<br \/>\nas the market unwinds expectations for the Fed tightening.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Markets are also<br \/>\nincreasingly pricing in an early \u200brate<br \/>\nhike in Japan, \u2060putting<br \/>\npressure on the nation&#8217;s shorter-dated bonds. The yield on the 5-year Japanese<br \/>\ngovernment bonds rose to 2.1%, a record high, while the 2-year yield reached a<br \/>\n31-year peak of 1.63%.<\/p>\n<p>The dollar index ,<br \/>\nwhich measures the greenback against a basket of currencies, rose 0.04% to<br \/>\n99.85. The euro was down 0.02% at $1.1538.<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese yen \u2060weakened 0.03% \u200bagainst the greenback to 159.31 per dollar, remaining off last week&#8217;s<br \/>\nhigh of 155.20 after \u200bseveral<br \/>\nsuspected rounds of intervention.
