It appears that some biological men who identify as women are calling the WNBA\u2019s<\/a> bluff by expressing interest in joining the league.<\/p>\n WNBA<\/a> Commissioner Cathy Engelbert<\/a>, has responded by saying the issue is nuanced and complicated (\u201cWNBA<\/a> commissioner says league will continue discussing issue of transgender participation,\u201d Web, Aug. 8). She hasn\u2019t explained what those nuances are, but she clearly finds herself in an uncomfortable position.<\/p>\n The issue seems straightforward: Either biological males who identify as women are eligible to play in the WNBA<\/a> or they are not. Before long, the league will likely have to provide a clear answer rather than rely on vague language.<\/p>\n But if biological males are to be eligible, what standards will determine who qualifies? Will there be height or weight limits? Testosterone thresholds? Other physical criteria? Whatever the standard, the league will have to explain why it is fair and consistent.<\/p>\n
