Around the globe, one creature is responsible for more than 700,000 human deaths each year \u2014 enough for the CDC to dub it the \u201cworld\u2019s deadliest animal.\u201d<\/p>\n
And here\u2019s the kicker: You don\u2019t have to venture into the wild to find it. It\u2019s probably lurking right outside your front door.<\/p>\n

Despite their tiny stature and adult lifespan of just two or three weeks, mosquitoes can do plenty of damage in that short window.<\/p>\n
These flying pests can transmit serious illnesses with a single bloodsucking bite, and just a handful of infected skeeters can be enough to spark an outbreak in a community.<\/p>\n
The deadliest disease mosquitoes spread is malaria, a parasitic infection responsible for more than 600,000 deaths each year, with young children in sub-Saharan Africa bearing the brunt.<\/p>\n
For Americans, malaria has largely been a disease brought home from abroad since it was eliminated in the US in the early 1950s. The country records about 2,000 cases in a typical year<\/a>, most linked to international travel.<\/p>\n But in 2023, malaria made an unwelcome comeback<\/a>. Ten locally acquired cases were documented that year across Florida, Texas, Maryland and Arkansas.<\/p>\n Mosquitoes are also a major driver of dengue fever, a viral illness that can cause high fever, headaches and joint pain. In severe cases, it can trigger dangerous bleeding, organ damage and a sharp drop in blood pressure that can be fatal without prompt treatment.<\/p>\n An estimated 400 million people<\/a> are infected with dengue each year worldwide, about 100 million develop symptoms and roughly 21,000 die from the disease.<\/p>\n And the problem is getting worse in the US<\/a>. A CDC report published earlier this year<\/a> found that the number of dengue cases reported in the US in 2024 was 359% higher than the annual average from 2010 to 2023.<\/p>\n The bites of bloodsucking mosquitoes can transmit at least six potentially life-threatening diseases. ihorhvozdetskiy \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n Other mosquito-borne diseases are also gaining traction in the US, with domestic cases of West Nile virus<\/a> currently at a 22-year high<\/a>.<\/p>\n Typically, the CDC receives about 10 reports of human West Nile cases through the end of June. This year, that number had already climbed to at least 48<\/a>.<\/p>\n Nearly 40 of those cases were severe neuroinvasive infections \u2014 the most serious form of the disease. West Nile is often asymptomatic or causes flu-like symptoms, but in some cases, it can progress to life-threatening illness.<\/p>\n The global death toll from West Nile virus is unknown, but the disease claims more than 130 lives<\/a> in the US every year. <\/p>\n Most mosquitoes don\u2019t cause severe illness, often leaving behind itchy, red bumps caused by an allergic reaction to proteins in the insect\u2019s saliva. ryanking999 \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n There are also mosquito-borne illnesses that aren\u2019t currently circulating in the US but still claim thousands of lives around the world each year.<\/p>\n Take yellow fever<\/a>. The viral disease is found in parts of Africa and South America, and travelers heading to high-risk areas are encouraged to get vaccinated before they go.<\/p>\n Most people who contract yellow fever experience mild symptoms \u2014 or none at all. But in severe cases, the disease can cause high fever, jaundice, bleeding and organ failure. The World Health Organization<\/a> estimates it causes up to 82,000 deaths each year.<\/p>\n
