The findings were presented at the American College of Cardiology\u2019s Annual Scientific Session in New Orleans.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_4965175\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/wine-expert-says-one-common-habit-could-sabotaging-every-sip\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">WINE EXPERT SAYS ONE COMMON HABIT COULD BE SABOTAGING EVERY SIP<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">In the study, participants reported their alcohol intake as never\/occasional, low, moderate or high.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">High consumption was defined as more than 40 grams per day for men (about three standard drinks) and more than 20 grams per day for women (about 1.4 standard drinks).<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/beer-and-wine-glasses.jpg\" alt=\"Beer and wine glasses\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Heavy drinking has been shown to raise mortality risk, but, at lower levels, what\u2019s in your glass may also matter, a new study suggests. (iStock)<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Participants with high alcohol consumption had a 24% higher risk of all-cause death, 36% higher risk of <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_4965176\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">cancer death<\/a> and 14% higher risk of cardiovascular death when compared to people who never or occasionally drank, according to the study findings.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">With low or moderate alcohol consumption, however, the <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_4965177\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/healthy-living\/longevity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">mortality risk<\/a> appeared to differ according to the type of beverage.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_4965178\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/america-hits-major-marijuana-milestone-daily-weed-use-surpasses-daily-drinking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">AMERICA HITS MAJOR MARIJUANA MILESTONE AS DAILY WEED USE SURPASSES DAILY DRINKING<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Spirits, beer and cider were associated with significantly higher mortality, the researchers found, while the same amount of wine intake was linked to significantly lower mortality. Moderate wine drinkers had a 21% lower risk of cardiovascular death than those who never or occasionally drank.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Conversely, those who drank low amounts of spirits, beer or cider were found to have a 9% higher risk of cardiovascular death.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/wine-drinking-red-wine-couple-drinking-wine-istock-medium.jpg\" alt=\"Portrait of young woman drinking red wine while man raising a toast. (iStock)<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">&#8220;These results come from the general population, and in certain high-risk groups, such as people with <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_4965179\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">chronic diseases<\/a> or cardiovascular conditions, the risks could be even higher,&#8221; Dr. Zhangling Chen, a professor at the Second Xiangya Hospital, Central South University in China and the study&#8217;s senior author, said in a press release.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">&#8220;These findings can help refine guidance, emphasizing that the health risks of alcohol depend not only on the amount of alcohol consumed but also on the type of beverage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"quote-text\">&#8220;Not everybody should have daily consumption of an alcoholic substance, whether it&#8217;s wine, beer or certain liquors.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">One potential reason for wine\u2019s lower mortality association could be that it contains compounds such as polyphenols and antioxidants, which could have beneficial effects on blood vessels, inflammation and cardiovascular health, the researchers noted.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Jessica Steinman, a Los Angeles addiction specialist and chief clinical officer for No Matter What Recovery, said the study\u2019s information is &#8220;helpful&#8221; but cautioned against broadly applying the findings to individuals, particularly those with a <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_4965180\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/home-cocktail-maker-says-gen-z-isnt-giving-up-alcohol-theyre-changing-how-they-drink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">history of substance misuse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_4965181\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/home-cocktail-maker-says-gen-z-isnt-giving-up-alcohol-theyre-changing-how-they-drink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">HOME COCKTAIL MAKER SAYS GEN Z ISN&#8217;T GIVING UP ALCOHOL \u2014 THEY&#8217;RE CHANGING HOW THEY DRINK<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">While certain ingredients or substances might help someone with a specific issue, she expressed her concern when it comes to <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_4965182\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/mental-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">mental health<\/a> issues and addiction.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">&#8220;When we hear these stories or get this research, it becomes a \u2018black and white\u2019 larger generalization for the population, and we want to be careful with that,&#8221; Steinman, who was not involved in the research, told Fox News Digital.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/man-beer.jpg\" alt=\"Man holding a beer\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Different substances have different levels of alcohol in them, and each person metabolizes alcohol differently, the expert noted.
