The country has declared a state of energy emergency throughout August and asked businesses and households to voluntarily reduce consumption, Reuters reported.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsr9i9f800543b6rr5ooixaj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Elsewhere, France and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/08\/03\/europe\/hungary-nuclear-plant-shutdown-heatwave-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hungary<\/a> have had to curtail nuclear power due to low river levels and high temperatures. The latest scorcher comes after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/08\/10\/climate\/europe-heatwave-wildfire-intl-hnk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Western Europe<\/a> recorded its hottest June and July on record, according to Copernicus, the European Union\u2019s climate monitor. That would be a heavy blow for an economy growing at less than 1% a year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsr73l0i000h3b6rmmg9xhy6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            BASF, the German chemicals giant, said it may be unable to fulfil orders of some chemical compounds because the Rhine\u2019s low water levels have restricted the supply of certain key raw materials.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsr73l0i000i3b6r8mhfoynb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe are\u2026 shifting volumes to alternative modes of transport such as trucks and rail,\u201d the company told CNN, noting that it was also using a greater number of vessels specifically designed to navigate shallow waters. In England, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/07\/30\/uk\/england-drought-heatwaves-wildfires-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">notoriously rainy<\/a> part of the world, family-owned Rookery Farm is harvesting its crop at 3 a.m. to ensure it has sufficient moisture content.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsrbh3hu008j3b6r5b6u18jy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHarvest is no longer just about dodging the rain \u2013 we\u2019re now adapting to crops that can become too dry, meaning more night-time harvesting to meet the quality standards our customers require,\u201d farmer Eleanor Gilbert said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DanuyyLgR0h\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">video posted to Instagram<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsr73l0i000p3b6r1bm2a6nj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As Europe grapples with successive heatwaves, it also faces the prospects of a winter energy crunch. Gas storage levels across the EU were 59% full on Tuesday, according to data from Gas Infrastructure Europe \u2014 well below the average for this time of year and on par with levels seen during summer 2021, when Russia had begun restricting exports to the continent.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsr73l0j000q3b6r0gr1sar4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019m really concerned,\u201d Anne-Sophie Corbeau, a researcher at Columbia University\u2019s Center on Global Energy Policy, said of the EU\u2019s ability to replenish diminished stocks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsr73l0j000r3b6r5tfzr8t6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere have been very few cargoes\u2026 exiting the Strait of Hormuz. All of them are going to Asia,\u201d she told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsr73l0j000s3b6ra2i1loag@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Summer is primetime in Europe for stocking up on gas before the colder winter months, when prices are often considerably higher. Yet the Strait of Hormuz is still effectively shut, choking off one fifth of the world\u2019s supply of liquefied natural gas \u2014 a liquid form of the fuel carried by tankers.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/gettyimages-2279879557.jpg\" alt=\"People take a dip in the Strait of Hormuz off Bandar Abbas, Iran, as cargo and commercial vessels lie at anchor on June 8.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsr73l0j000t3b6rv9xipsc9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Remaining cargoes, such as those from the United States, are also more likely to head for Asia than Europe, say analysts, because demand there is particularly strong and buyers are stumping up more.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsr73l0j000w3b6re9wzs5d2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But this is \u201cnot a \u201922 crisis,\u201d said Christoph Halser, senior analyst of gas and LNG research at Rystad Energy, referring to that year\u2019s historic price spikes in Europe following Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsr73l0j000x3b6rqrpc6tdd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Since then, the continent has greatly reduced its imports of Moscow\u2019s gas \u2014 the bulk of which arrived via pipelines \u2014 as well as reduced its overall consumption.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsr73l0j000y3b6rz4fvh5fk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cGas demand in Europe today is roughly 20% lower than, let\u2019s say, in 2021,\u201d Halser told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsr73l0j000z3b6r15e0y777@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Massimo Di Odoardo, vice president of gas and LNG research at Wood Mackenzie, is also confident that Europe will avoid a dire scenario of energy shortages and blackouts.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsr73l0j00103b6r7vybkilw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The risk of shortages are \u201coverstated\u201d he said, adding that the region has the means to \u201cbuy itself out\u201d of any such predicament.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsr73l0j00113b6r825yxxnh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, prices are unnervingly elevated.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsr73l0j00123b6rr1isddbc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The price of Europe\u2019s benchmark natural gas contract settled at \u20ac61 ($70) per megawatt hour on Wednesday, well above the \u20ac32 ($37) logged on the same day in 2025, according to Intercontinental Exchange data.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsr73qtc00153b6r56ao4ywc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            During the winter, \u201cEurope should be really worried about a situation where the Strait of Hormuz doesn\u2019t open because this could certainly result in prices being extremely high,\u201d Di Odoardo said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>              <script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"London\u00a0\u2014\u00a0 Nuclear power plants idled.
