Arsenal have opened talks with Bayer Leverkusen<\/a> over a move for Jarell Quansah as they intensify efforts to bring in cover for William Saliba and\u00a0Jurri\u00ebn Timber.<\/p>\n

The England defender, who left Liverpool last summer for an initial \u00a330m<\/a> and was part of Thomas Tuchel\u2019s World Cup squad, has been identified as an ideal replacement for the France and Netherlands defenders, who will miss the start of the new season due to injury. While Quansah\u2019s preferred position is in central defence, he was also deployed at right-back by Tuchel at the World Cup and was sent off in the last-16 victory over Mexico<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It is understood that Leverkusen are reluctant to sell the Warrington-born 23-year-old, who signed a five-year deal when he left Anfield last July, and would want at least \u20ac50m (\u00a343m). Arsenal<\/a> \u2013 who saw a bid of \u00a330m for Aston Villa\u2019s Ezri Konsa rejected earlier in the window \u2013 are not thought to want to pay that much but now could test the German club\u2019s resolve by submitting a similar offer. Liverpool had a \u20ac70m buyback option on Quansah but that has now expired.<\/p>\n

Arsenal are still believed to be interested in Konsa, who also filled in at right-back for England during the World Cup but is better known as a central defender. Villa value the 28-year-old at \u00a360m.<\/p>\n

Mikel Arteta said this week<\/a> that Saliba\u2019s back injury would take \u201csome time to heal\u201d and he was unsure about when he would be available again. Arsenal also have concerns over Timber, who pulled out of the Netherlands squad on the eve of the\u00a0World Cup after failing to recover from a persistent groin injury that forced him to miss most of the run\u2011in last season.<\/p>\n

\u201cJurri\u00ebn is progressing really well,\u201d Arteta said after Arsenal\u2019s friendly defeat by Borussia \u00adDortmund last\u00a0Sunday. \u201cHe\u2019s on the pitch, he\u2019s\u00a0doing quite a lot right now, but it\u2019s still weeks away. I cannot tell you\u00a0how much.\u201d<\/p>\n

Arsenal would still like to sign a new\u00a0attacker before the end of the window and could allow Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus to depart in order to free up more funds. \u00adGalatasaray have offered \u00a338m for Martinelli, although the Brazil \u00adforward has turned down a move to Turkey. Napoli have shown an \u00adinterest in Jesus.<\/p>\n

Ethan Nwaneri could also be sold, with Milan, Fulham, RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund among those who have been linked with the 19-year-old.<\/p>\n
