{"id":813830,"date":"2026-08-14T22:38:11","date_gmt":"2026-08-14T22:38:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/813830\/"},"modified":"2026-08-14T22:38:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-14T22:38:11","slug":"nasa-is-flying-a-modified-u-2-spy-plane-to-study-how-wildfires-can-create-storms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/813830\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA is flying a modified U-2 spy plane to study how wildfires can create storms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmst6yrfe00003b6rl8dnyv1x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            NASA is using a modified version of the U-2 spy plane, created during the Cold War, to study one of Earth\u2019s least understood weather phenomena: wildfire generated storms.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmst6yrfe00013b6r7mbxnq02@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The jet, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/centers-and-facilities\/armstrong\/er-2-aircraft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NASA calls the ER-2<\/a>, contains a flying laboratory of scientific instruments rather than military defenses and has different wiring.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmst6yrfe00023b6rrduhirvv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The aircraft\u2019s newest mission is to study weather generated storms.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmst6yrfe00033b6r1u6d5x1g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Fire clouds, scientifically known as pyrocumulonimbus storms, are gigantic thunderstorms produced by wildfire heat. These storms can include lightning, strong winds, and in some cases, fire tornadoes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmst6yrff00043b6r6hkejvew@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s kind of like a chimney where the smoke from the fire is being pushed upward into the thunderstorm, accelerated through that vertical column, and then released,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrl.navy.mil\/Media\/News\/Article\/4505096\/nrl-leads-nasa-wildfire-research-mission-to-better-predict-pyrocumulonimbus-sto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">David A. Peterson<\/a>, a meteorologist at the Naval Research Laboratory.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmst6yrff00053b6r5fhsxt7f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He is the principal investigator for NASA\u2019s INjected Smoke and PYRocumulonimbus Experiment, or<a href=\"https:\/\/espo.nasa.gov\/inspyre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> INSPYRE<\/a>, a mission that will study these storms\u2019 erratic behavior.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/c-inspyre-gv-observes-pyrocu-rf04-8-06-26.jpg\" alt=\"A pyrocumulonimbus \u201cfire cloud\u201d seen from the Gulfstream V jet by the INSPYRE science team.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"750\" width=\"1000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmst6yrff00063b6r7g1x0604@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe generated smoke column is basically a warm bubble that triggers the thunderstorm, so it\u2019s like any other really tall, severe thunderstorm cloud, but now you\u2019ve filled it with smoke. The fire at that point is essentially feeding itself,\u201d Peterson said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmst6yrff00073b6rkqkxnbj9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meteorologists have not been able to properly forecast pyrocumulonimbus storms because they form during unpredictable conditions. Only recently, scientists discovered that these fire generated weather systems can surpass a natural atmospheric barrier, <a href=\"https:\/\/research.noaa.gov\/towering-wildfire-clouds-have-big-impacts-on-the-stratosphere\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reaching the stratosphere<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmst6yrff00083b6ri80qet0u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere\u2019s a volcano-like effect, with smoke being pushed really high into the atmosphere, and we\u2019ve learned in recent years that once smoke reaches these high altitudes, it can obviously be transported by jet stream winds really fast,\u201d Peterson said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmst6yrff00093b6rj0f9g8y9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The mission took flight in July and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightaware.com\/live\/flight\/N806NA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">has already flown over<\/a> burning wildfires in northern Oregon and western Canada.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmst6yrff000a3b6r3he5v8tv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019re looking with (NASA\u2019s) INSPYRE mission to understand first and foremost what conditions produce these storms,\u201d Peterson said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmst6yrff000b3b6rwe2cu5ma@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            NASA, which is tasked with aeronautics research, as well as space exploration, is using their ER-2 jets because of their high-altitude flying capabilities.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmst6yrff000c3b6reuog7hdc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThink of it as a steerable satellite. It\u2019s flying above the weather at maybe 65,000 feet, and we can basically have it orbit back and forth over a wildfire,\u201d Peterson said. \u201cAll of the instruments on the plane are tied to measuring the fire energetics of the plume. So, there\u2019s radars that can tell you how big the plume is, the altitude it\u2019s at, and then also the air motion within it. It\u2019s also tracking lightning, so electric field within these clouds.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmst6yrff000d3b6rukant9y8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And while the ER-2 plane is flying over the storm, NASA is simultaneously flying a Gulfstream 5 jet inside of the clouds.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmst6yrff000e3b6rbuwq7mol@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe idea is that the data they collect (can) inform each other,\u201d Paterson said. The G-5 is directly in the clouds, and so it can inform the radars that are seeing the cloud and then relate that to what the airborne satellite, is telling you.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmst6yrff000f3b6r314llbxi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The goal of this mission is mainly to one day being able to predict these storms.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmst6yrff000g3b6r2sdejpp6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019re both using tools that are just being developed now by some of our science team members to help guide the mission, but we\u2019re also using the mission to help feed back to improve those prediction tools,\u201d Peterson said. \u201cThere will inevitably be a component of the mission where we produce better tools to predict this type of fire behavior.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>        Origins of the aircraft and its role in the Cold War<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmst6yrfg000i3b6rfs16ppaq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The ER-2\u2019s lineage dates back to the mid-1950s, before spy satellites, when the US needed a plane to see what was happening behind the Iron Curtain.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmst6yrfg000j3b6rcaj8qh4k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIn the early 1950s, Soviet military and economic developments were a mystery to the United States because the USSR was a secretive, closed society,\u201d according to the National Museum of the United States Air Force.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmst6yrfg000k3b6rgq0w1p9s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The U-2 spy plane, nicknamed \u201cDragon Lady,\u201d was specifically designed to fly at extremely high altitudes over the Soviet Union.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmst6yrfg000l3b6rjq2eg23j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At the time, the US believed that no Soviet missiles could reach the plane\u2019s cruising altitude, giving it free range over the country.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmst6yrfg000m3b6rvekdim49@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But on May 1, 1960, just four years after the U-2\u2019s debut, the Soviet miliary shot down one of the planes, flown by Francis Gary Powers, proving that the US underestimated Soviet capabilities.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmst6yrfg000n3b6rxlm5q13l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yet the U-2 continued to provide critical intelligence during the rest of the Cold War, Cuban Missile Crisis, the Vietnam War as well as modern conflicts, including Iraq and Afghanistan.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmst6yrfg000o3b6rmqxpoyon@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Now, more than 70 years after the first flight, the U-2 \u201cDragon Lady\u201d is still flying and NASA\u2019s ER-2 is in the air working to defeat what it calls the \u201cfire-breathing dragon of clouds.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"NASA is using a modified version of the U-2 spy plane,
