CRAWFORD COUNTY, Wis. (WKBT) \u2014 A Crawford County deer farm has tested positive for chronic wasting disease, state agriculture officials confirmed Friday.<\/p>\n
The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) announced the positive test result came from a two-year-old female elk at the farm, according to a news release.<\/p>\n
The farm is now under quarantine while DATCP and U.S. Department of Agriculture veterinarians and staff investigate the case.<\/p>\n
Chronic wasting disease is a fatal neurological disease that affects deer, elk and moose. A prion causes the disease, which attacks the animal’s nervous system.<\/p>\n
The quarantine will remain in place while officials complete their epidemiological investigation to determine how the disease entered the farm and whether other animals may be affected.<\/p>\n
