BLOOMINGTON (25News Now) – Bloomington Mayor Dan Brady on Saturday issued a second emergency declaration after many areas in the city experienced flooding from heavy rain.

Brady also extended the initial emergency declaration to deal separately with widespread damage caused by earlier storms. The declarations begin the process to seek federal government aid and low-interest loans to help with repairs if the city meets certain damage thresholds.

“Our community has been through a lot in just a few days,” said City Manager Jeff Jurgens said in a prepared statement.

“Our crews and emergency responders have been working tirelessly, and I am proud of their efforts. They continue to deal with hundreds of downed and damaged trees and widespread power outages and extended their efforts today to also addressing flooding issues,” Jurgens said.

“Expanding the emergency declaration reflects the continuing impact of these storms and starts the pathway for potential relief from the federal government and/or low interest loans if certain thresholds are met,” the city manager said.

The city council will meet in special session Monday night to consider extending both declarations for 30 days.

Flooded roads:

City leaders are urging the public not to travel on flooded roads, and they said flooding may weaken the ground underneath roadways may cause pavement to deteriorate or become unstable.

“Even if a roadway appears passable, conditions underneath the water may not be visible,” the city’s release said.

“If you encounter a flooded roadway, turn around and find another route. Do not drive around barricades or attempt to determine how deep the water is,” the release said.

Storm damage bulk pickup:

The city is also doing away with the $30 fee charged for using more than one bucket for bulk waste collection, but residents must document their storm damage on the myBloomington online portal or by downloading the myBloomington mobile app.

Residents hauling materials themselves are encouraged to use the Citizen Convenience Center at 402 North East Street, which is open for extended hours to help with storm cleanup.

· Sunday: 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.

· Monday: 7 a.m. – 3 p.m. (The Center is normally closed on Mondays.)
