{"id":817256,"date":"2026-08-18T04:00:14","date_gmt":"2026-08-18T04:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/817256\/"},"modified":"2026-08-18T04:00:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T04:00:14","slug":"water-detected-surprisingly-close-to-our-galaxys-supermassive-black-hole-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/817256\/","title":{"rendered":"Water Detected Surprisingly Close to Our Galaxy&#8217;s Supermassive Black Hole : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the center of our galaxy lurks a supermassive  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/black-holes\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73020\" data-postid=\"214188\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">black hole<\/a>: a ravenous object capable of devouring matter that strays too close.<\/p>\n<p>Yet new observations from the JWST suggest that right in that black hole&#8217;s cosmic neighborhood, a dying star is still casting matter back out into space.<\/p>\n<p>Not all stars are massive enough to die as explosive supernovae that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/this-exploding-star-was-the-most-powerful-we-ve-ever-spotted\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">outshine entire galaxies<\/a> like brilliant cosmic disco balls.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/this-exploding-star-was-the-most-powerful-we-ve-ever-spotted\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>Instead, stars born with up to around eight times the mass of our Sun become bloated, reddish, and cool, gradually losing their outer layers into space before becoming zombified white dwarfs \u2013 and perhaps even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/white-dwarf-star-enters-its-crystallization-era-turning-into-a-cosmic-diamond\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;diamonds&#8217; in the sky<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yet whether it&#8217;s the violent chemical enrichment of supernovae or that of slowly shriveling suns, death births life: including us, because as Carl Sagan said, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/hubble-reveals-carbons-intergalactic-odyssey-before-becoming-part-of-us\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">We are made of star-stuff<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Untitled-design-47.jpg\" alt=\"'Especially Exciting': JWST Finds Water Surviving Surprisingly Close to Our Galaxy's Supermassive Black Hole\" class=\"wp-image-214189\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The field that holds the evolved, dying star IRS 3, captured with JWST&#8217;s NIRCam (Near Infrared Camera) and MIRI. Chan<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Now, using the JWST, astronomers have detected some of the most important star-stuff of all, including water, dust, and other oxygen-based-chemistry products, in some of the most inhospitable conditions imaginable.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Galactic centers are among the most extreme environments, so understanding whether stars can continue enriching their surroundings there is an important question,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/esawebb.org\/news\/weic2617\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explains<\/a> Florian Pei\u00dfker, an astrophysicist at the University of Cologne in Germany and lead author of a study detailing this discovery.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With Webb, we can directly observe how stars behave under these conditions and see that dust production remains remarkably resilient.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1787025610_691_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>The researchers observed the inner parsec (a 3.26-light-year swathe) of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/strange-clues-in-the-milky-way-suggest-our-galaxy-may-have-flipped-sideways\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Milky Way<\/a> using JWST&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/webb\/mid-infrared-instrument-miri\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mid-Infrared Instrument<\/a> (MIRI), focusing on a dominantly bright dying star called IRS 3.<\/p>\n<p>IRS 3 \u2013 named because it&#8217;s an Infrared Source, not an Internal Revenue Service tax bracket \u2013 is an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asymptotic_giant_branch\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star<\/a>, meaning it&#8217;s in a late stage of its life.<\/p>\n<p>The star&#8217;s powerful stellar winds blast its outer layers into space at estimated speeds of 15 kilometers (9 miles) per second. <\/p>\n<p>This has surrounded it with an immense dusty envelope that extends 10,000 astronomical units (AU), with one AU representing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/how-big-is\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">~150 million kilometers between Earth and the Sun<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>IRS 3 is located just 0.55 light-years from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/earliest-black-hole-ever-spotted-at-the-dawn-of-time-and-its-already-huge\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sagittarius A*<\/a>, the 4-million-solar-mass monster at the scintillatingly energetic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/milky-ways-heart-shines-like-a-diamond-in-record-breaking-new-photos\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heart of the Milky Way<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/milky-way-heart-closeup.jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-214191\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The central region of our Milky Way, part of the most detailed view of our galactic center ever observed, courtesy of the Euclid space telescope. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/milky-ways-heart-shines-like-a-diamond-in-record-breaking-new-photos\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">(ESA\/Euclid\/Euclid Consortium\/NASA, CFHT, image processing by J.-C. Bertin (CEA Paris-Saclay))<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As mentioned, its death throes enrich the cosmos with dust, but astronomers have long wondered whether this process can play out so close to a supermassive black hole.<\/p>\n<p>So they ran multiple simulation variations to reconcile JWST&#8217;s observations with stellar models across a range of temperatures, luminosities, and chemical compositions.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"618\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Irs-3-Large.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-214193\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>An image in mid-infrared wavelengths showing IRS 3 among the jumble of our galactic center. <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1051\/0004-6361\/202660243\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> (Pei\u00dfker et al., A&amp;A, 2026)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Based on the models and observations, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/rainbow-discovered-around-a-nearby-dead-star-puzzles-scientists\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bow shock<\/a> created as the dying star&#8217;s envelope smashes into interstellar space, the researchers inferred its most salient stats.<\/p>\n<p>IRS 3 may have been born as far away as 16 light-years from the galactic center and migrated inward. <\/p>\n<p>It could be about six times as massive as the Sun and approximately 72 million years old \u2013 a pup compared to our Sun&#8217;s expected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/strange-stars-look-suspiciously-like-theyve-been-eating-planets\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">10-billion-year lifespan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?int_promo=stargazing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"642\" height=\"336\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/FOMO-1200x628-_Dont-miss-the-next-breakthrough_-cosmic-colourful-642x336.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" class=\"wp-image-201722\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And although IRS 3 may have an effective temperature of &#8216;only&#8217; 2800 K (about 4,600 degrees Fahrenheit or 2,500 degrees Celsius), compared to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-finally-solve-70-year-mystery-of-suns-impossible-heat\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">our Sun&#8217;s surface temperature of 5,500 \u00b0C<\/a>, it may shine 60,000 times brighter.<\/p>\n<p>Importantly, this work demonstrates that such stars can keep supplying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/radioactive-stardust-from-an-ancient-cosmic-blast-is-still-raining-on-earth\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chemically rich space dust<\/a> and water to galactic centers, despite harsh conditions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is the first time a continuous mid-infrared spectrum has been collected for this star, allowing us to detect the features from the silicate dust and uncover the star&#8217;s true chemical identity,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/esawebb.org\/news\/weic2617\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> Macarena Garcia Marin, an ESA scientist for Webb&#8217;s MIRI instrument and one of the study&#8217;s co-authors.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1787025614_851_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, as the star pulses in its death throes, it &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/a-rare-observation-of-an-unstable-dying-star-foreshadows-the-fate-of-our-sun\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coughs up<\/a>&#8216; its bloated outer layers, creating a nesting-doll-like set of shells at intervals of hundreds of years, potentially dating back to 5,000 years ago, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3847\/1538-4357\/aa5ea2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previous study<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The detection of water is especially exciting because it shows that molecular material can survive in an environment dominated by intense radiation,&#8221; like a cosmic sourdough, who knows what otherworldly products may manifest.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This tells us that even close to a supermassive black hole, stars can continue contributing material back into their surroundings,&#8221;
