\u201cIt\u2019s been a crazy day. All I know is that he\u2019s dealing with a personal issue. We\u2019re trying to figure that out. He didn\u2019t show up today and he was put on the restricted list,\u201d the manager said postgame (link via Alex D\u2019Agostino of Sports Illustrated<\/a>). \u201cThat\u2019s as much as I know right now. \u2026 I knew that there was something going on today when I met with (the media), but I still believed he was going to be here. He just didn\u2019t show up.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI know there was a lot of discussions about it at different points in time in the clubhouse today,\u201d Lovullo later added. \u201cThere was a lot of curiosity. We care for Ketel.\u201d John Gambadoro of 98.7 FM<\/a> reported this evening that the D-Backs believe but aren\u2019t positive that Marte remains at the team\u2019s hotel in Boston.<\/p>\n 6:08pm: The Diamondbacks placed second baseman\u00a0Ketel Marte<\/a> on the restricted list shortly before first pitch tonight in Boston. Infielder\u00a0Jose Fernandez<\/a> was recalled from Triple-A Reno. The team hasn\u2019t publicly commented.<\/p>\n Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic<\/a> reports that Marte traveled with the team to Boston but did not show up to Fenway Park. According to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com<\/a>, the team had waited right up to game time in the hope that Marte would arrive. Piecoro adds<\/a> that Marte was expected to serve as the designated hitter. Lars Nootbaar<\/a> gets that assignment instead, albeit at the bottom of the lineup with Boston pitching a lefty opener in front of\u00a0Brayan Bello<\/a>.<\/p>\n Fernandez was with the team on the taxi squad because\u00a0Nolan Arenado<\/a> is day-to-day<\/a> with a torso injury. Arenado isn\u2019t playing tonight and might require a stint on the injured list. Fernandez draws right in at the hot corner as part of a makeshift infield that also features\u00a0Ildemaro Vargas<\/a> and\u00a0Tim Tawa<\/a> around star shortstop\u00a0Geraldo Perdomo<\/a>.<\/p>\n The restricted list is used when players are unavailable for non-injury reasons. There\u2019s no minimum stint and players are not paid. It\u2019s fairly common for a player to spend one or two days on the restricted list while attending to a personal matter (e.g. an extra day on paternity leave). Marte\u2019s absence, however, seems to have caught the team off guard. Piecoro reports<\/a> that the star second baseman is physically healthy but did not show up for the game.<\/p>\n It\u2019s almost a year to the day that Piecoro and others reported that Marte\u2019s work habits had frustrated<\/a> some of his teammates. That was most directly traced to a few days he took off after the 2025 All-Star Break, which resulted in a two-day placement on the restricted list. Marte\u2019s home in Arizona had been burglarized over the Break, but some teammates were reportedly irritated that he flew home to the Dominican Republic and missed their first series of the second half.<\/p>\n Manager Torey Lovullo and GM Mike Hazen generally backed him publicly. Marte apologized. He was in trade rumors over the winter but the D-Backs had a lofty ask and stopped taking calls in early January to focus on adding to the 2026 roster. He gained full no-trade rights<\/a> in early April by reaching 10 years of service time.<\/p>\n The Diamondbacks are one game back of a Wild Card spot.
