The U.S. special envoy for Syria said Tuesday that Israeli airstrikes on a military airbase in northwestern Syria<\/a> constitute an \u201cunnecessary escalation\u201d that does not advance regional stability.<\/p>\n

In a statement on X, Ambassador Tom Barrack said the United States was deeply concerned concerned by the attacks, and added that Washington was encouraging all parties to prioritize \u201clogical discourse\u201d over further military incidents.<\/p>\n

The government of Syria\u2019s Interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa has neither \u201cadopted a predatory posture nor maintained proxy forces\u201d but has repeatedly indicated a preference for de-escalation with Israel, Barrack said.<\/p>\n

The United States has in the past, and will continue in the future, to host discussions to encourage \u201cdiplomatic cadence over kinetic frustration\u201d for both nations, Barrack added.<\/p>\n

The strikes early Tuesday caused material damage without inflicting any casualties, Syrian state TV reported.<\/p>\n

State TV said eight strikes hit the runway of the Abu Duhur air base in the northwestern province of Idlib. It gave no further details.<\/p>\n

There was no comment from the Israeli military on the attack. Turkish officials also did not immediately respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitor, said foreign fighters used to stay at the base before they were recently asked to leave.<\/p>\n

The Observatory added that Turkey, which is a main backer of Syria\u2019s government, has been rehabilitating the air base that had been out of service for years during Syria\u2019s conflict that left nearly half a million people dead.<\/p>\n

Since the fall of Bashar Assad\u2019s government in December 2024 when insurgents marched into his seat of power in Damascus, tensions between Israel and Turkey over Syria have been on the rise.<\/p>\n

Israel carried out hundreds of airstrikes around Syria after Assad\u2019s fall, mainly destroying assets of the Syrian army to keep them out of the hands of his successors.<\/p>\n

Israeli drone strikes on a southern suburb of Damascus last year killed eight soldiers and wounded others.<\/p>\n
