Now that a little bit of footage from<\/a> Star Wars: Starfighter is out in the world, we can start digging a little deeper. We now know that in the 2027 Star Wars film, Ryan Gosling plays Kade Auberon<\/a>, the owner of a decommissioned Imperial Starfighter he claims is the fastest ever. That, along with a young character<\/a> played by Flynn Gray, will somehow set off the latest adventure in a galaxy far, far away.<\/p>\n

Okay. We know. That\u2019s not a lot. But in what he claims to be his first interview ever for the film, director Shawn Levy told Fandango<\/a> that the film\u2019s tone and grit were inspired by a story that, at first, is surprising, but also isn\u2019t once you think about it. It\u2019s The Outsiders, the 1967 S. E. Hinton novel everyone reads in high school, which was then adapted by Francis Ford Coppola in one of the most star-studded films of the early 1980s.<\/p>\n

The Outsiders focuses on two groups of teenagers\u2014the Socs and the Greasers\u2014who clash over their social and economic differences. It\u2019s a gritty, friendship and loyalty-driven tale that, when you realize Starfighter centers on the relationship of two men, starts to paint a picture.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Outsiders, which was both a book and a movie, Gosling and I weirdly connected in and about early on when the script was still evolving,\u201d Levy said. \u201cWe spoke about how that movie captured something about characters who are\u2026 they\u2019re not the privileged ones. They\u2019re from the wrong side of the tracks. Our characters in Starfighter are from the wrong side of the galaxy. And it\u2019s about these sort of marginalized outsiders who find each other and have a shot at discovering heroism through their connections.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo there was just something kind of blue-collar, working class, grounded and textured and real to The Outsiders that we tried to bring to Star Wars and Starfighter,\u201d the director continued. \u201cYes, it\u2019s set in space. It\u2019s high tech. There\u2019s lots of visual effects, but it\u2019s very much grounded in characters and grounded in the stuff of these characters doing the best they can in a chaotic galaxy that hasn\u2019t yet been explored.\u201d<\/p>\n

There\u2019s that too. Starfighter will be the furthest into the future Star Wars has ever been, set several years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Who is running things after the Resistance defeated the First Order? Is anyone? That too is sure to contribute to this lawless feeling.<\/p>\n

Star Wars: Starfighter is set for release on May 28, 2027.<\/p>\n
