The researchers split 55 adults into two groups, with each group completing one eight-week diet before switching to the other after a washout period, during which they followed their normal diet.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">Both diets followed the Eatwell Guide \u2013 the UK\u2019s official government advice on how to eat a healthy, balanced diet. Participants were sent more than enough food and told to eat as they normally would \u2013 with no restriction. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">Interestingly, after eight weeks on the diet, both groups lost weight, potentially due to the improved nutritional profile of what they were eating compared to their normal diet. However, on the MPF diet, participants experienced a 2.06% reduction compared to a 1.05% reduction on the UPF diet. In other words, they lost twice as much weight. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">What\u2019s more, the greater weight loss on the MPF diet came from reduced fat mass and total body water with no change in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a65123043\/kettlebell-workout-muscle-50s-menopause\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a65123043\/kettlebell-workout-muscle-50s-menopause\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"muscle\" data-node-id=\"11.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">muscle<\/a> or fat-free mass, suggesting a healthier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a65444870\/muscle-fat-loss-weight-70s-strength-transformation\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a65444870\/muscle-fat-loss-weight-70s-strength-transformation\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"body composition\" data-node-id=\"11.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">body composition<\/a> overall. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">\u2018Though a 2% reduction may not seem very big, that is only over eight weeks and without people trying to actively reduce their intake,\u2019 the study\u2019s lead author Dr Samuel Dicken said of the results. If we scaled these results up over the course of a year, we&#8217;d expect to see a 13% weight reduction in men and a 9% reduction in women on the minimally processed diet.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>What does this mean for us?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">The findings suggest that following a diet containing mostly minimally processed food supports sustainable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/fat-loss\/a34448055\/walking-for-weight-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/fat-loss\/a34448055\/walking-for-weight-loss\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"weight loss\" data-node-id=\"14.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">weight loss<\/a>. This makes sense since such foods tend to be more satiating and less energy-dense, which can often lead to people eating less naturally without restricting in any way. Indeed, the researchers also found that there were significantly greater improvements in the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/a62527719\/high-protein-desserts\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/a62527719\/high-protein-desserts\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"cravings\" data-node-id=\"14.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cravings<\/a> and ability to resist them on the MPF diet compared to the UPF diet.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">It\u2019s certainly not to say UPF bars and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/healthy-eating\/a65330022\/easy-oat-recipes\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/healthy-eating\/a65330022\/easy-oat-recipes\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"snacks\" data-node-id=\"15.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">snacks<\/a> (which can be useful sources of fuel, especially in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a39120560\/ab-workouts\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a39120560\/ab-workouts\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"workout\" data-node-id=\"15.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">workout<\/a> context) are off-limits. In fact, the findings support the idea that not all UPFs are inherently unhealthy \u2013 particularly when they adhere to appropriate nutritional guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"17\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">To further consolidate these results, as is often the case,  more research is needed and on a larger scale.
