QUINCY (WGEM) – The Quincy Arts Center is bringing the heat this Friday with its new exhibit.<\/p>\n
The new exhibit celebrates the relationship between art and the natural world. \u201cReturn to Nature\u201d glass exhibit invites the community to explore the glass works of 13 artists from across the United States.<\/p>\n
Participating artists are bringing different perspectives from locations spanning New Jersey, Kentucky and right here in the Gem City.<\/p>\n
Libby Campbell, director of marketing for the art center, said it is designed to be more than just a visual display; it offers visitors a rare opportunity to learn about the complexities of glassmaking.<\/p>\n
\u201cGlass is a unique medium,\u201d Campbell said. \u201cIt\u2019s something that people don\u2019t always have access to see or to work with because it requires extreme heat to mold it into shape.\u201d<\/p>\n
To ensure the exhibition is accessible to visitors of all ages, the Quincy Art Center has partnered with the Quincy Children\u2019s Museum (QCM). This partnership brings hands-on, safe learning opportunities to younger art enthusiasts, avoiding the safety hazards associated with sharp glass.<\/p>\n
Located within the center, the \u201cCollab-oratory\u201d features interactive ways for children to explore the properties of glass, including:<\/p>\n
Combine light and colored \u201cglass\u201d at QCM\u2019s tableLightZilla board making luminous artworkMake glass bead friendship bracelets Make your own stained glass window (with paper mediums)Stack gemstones to make creations out of lightWatch a video from the Corning Museum of Glass to learn how glass is used to make art<\/p>\n
According to Campbell, offering tailored experiences for both adults and children ensures that the entire community can engage with the arts together.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s just so much community support and a fantastic response,\u201d Campbell said. \u201cUsually an exhibit opening like this will have over 100 people enjoying the art work and it\u2019s completely free.\u201d<\/p>\n
The public is invited to experience both exhibits this Friday, Aug. 21, from 6 p.m.-8 p.m.<\/p>\n
From 6 p.m.-7 p.m., artist Edd Johannemann will show his process of transforming recycled glass into animal sculptures. At 7 p.m., Quincy Art Center Director of Exhibitions Elizabeth Swick will host a gallery insight where she will welcome guests to the exhibition. <\/p>\n
Attendees will also learn about upcoming opportunities to experience glass through education and community events.<\/p>\n
Both exhibits are free and open through Oct. 24.<\/p>\n
