Pelle started 54 of the 70 games he played last season. There’s no free agent in the Heat’s price range who would knock him out of the starting lineup. – Donald. Miami.

A: All fair points. But the Heat team that Pelle Larsson started for last season not only wasn’t a championship contender, but wasn’t even a playoff team. When the stakes rise, so, too, does the talent level have to rise. That’s not to say that Pelle Larsson shouldn’t and won’t be part of the rotation. He will and should, as a primary reserve wing. That would leave Bobby Portis Jr. as the primary reserve among the big men, Tim Hardaway Jr., the primary reserve among scorers, Pelle the primary reserve among wings and Dru Smith the primary reserve among point guards. And that should set up nicely, with a pair of scorers, in Portis and Hardaway, and a pair of defenders, in Larsson and Smith. And that leads back to the remaining glaring hole of not having a proven, playoff-level option to start at shooting guard. So, no, no disparagement of Pelle at all. In fact, among the Heat’s next goals should be locking Pelle into an extension before he hits free agency next summer. The respect is there and ample, just that it has to be in the right role.

Q: Bobby Portis is a power forward not a center. Let’s not go back to playing folks out of position like we used to. It leads to losses and more losses. Get a real center. – Naija.

A: Then again, Erik Spoelstra would scoff at the simplicity of such positional designations. Besides, with Portis, it is likely that either Giannis Antetokounmpo or Bam Adebayo would be on the floor, as well. Bam, of course, has spent the majority of his career capably at center. And Giannis has played at least a third of his minutes at center over the last five years, per Basketball Reference. Now, could the Heat use another big body? Sure. But they only have the current payroll wherewithal at the moment under their hard cap to add two players. So it also comes down to a matter of areas of greatest need, especially considering who might or might not be available.

Q: Are the Heat really waiting around for Klay Thompson? – Bryan.

A: Apparently yes. Camp is still more than a month away. The Mavericks still have one more player under standard contract than allowed during the regular season. The Heat still can offer a minimum-scale contract at any time without impacting potential funds for Klay Thompson. Now, if something more intriguing comes along in the interim, including perhaps an ultimatum from DeMar DeRozan – if he even is in such position – then they can address it at that moment. For now, even if it comes off as oxymoron, it’s time to chill under this blazing South Florida sun.

Q: Aren’t you being disrespectful to Pelle Larsson when you state that a starting shooting guard is one…

[64
71475,2558,8173,71476,355,99
post-818719","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-nba","tag-ask-ira","tag-latest-headlines","tag-miami-heat","tag-miami-heat-blog","tag-nba","tag-sports
["GET
