(Image credit: NASA\/JPL-Caltech\/ASU)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-39ea1860-9b34-11f1-94bb-c78624fb2c6f\">People around the world enjoyed stellar views with last week&#8217;s total solar eclipse.<\/p>\n<p>And the day after we looked up to see the moon obscuring out sun, NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/perseverance-rover-mars-2020-mission\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/perseverance-rover-mars-2020-mission\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/perseverance-rover-mars-2020-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Perseverance <\/a><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/solar-system\/mars\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/solar-system\/mars\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/solar-system\/mars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mars<\/a> rover looked up to see its own Martian solar eclipse.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-82b33f52-9b3b-11f1-9155-a716ac639d63\"\/>What is it? <a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-82b33fca-9b3b-11f1-b386-b375c751816e-0\"><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15584-solar-eclipses.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15584-solar-eclipses.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15584-solar-eclipses.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Solar eclipses<\/a> aren&#8217;t unique to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a>. In theory, any planet with at least one orbiting <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">moon<\/a> would have times where that moon might eclipse some part of its sun to anyone looking up from the planet&#8217;s surface.<\/p>\n<p>On Aug. 13, 2026, one day after <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/solar-eclipses\/see-gorgeous-views-of-the-aug-12-total-solar-eclipse-captured-from-space\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/solar-eclipses\/see-gorgeous-views-of-the-aug-12-total-solar-eclipse-captured-from-space\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/solar-eclipses\/see-gorgeous-views-of-the-aug-12-total-solar-eclipse-captured-from-space\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth&#8217;s total solar eclipse<\/a> in which our moon temporarily blocked out our sun for skywatchers in some locations, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/mars.nasa.gov\/mars2020\/multimedia\/raw-images\/ZL7_1948_0839864813_757EBY_N0910000ZCAM01576_1100LMJ\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/mars.nasa.gov\/mars2020\/multimedia\/raw-images\/ZL7_1948_0839864813_757EBY_N0910000ZCAM01576_1100LMJ\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mars saw its own solar eclipse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Looking up with its left Mastcam-Z camera, Perseverance snapped this image of one of Mars&#8217; two moons, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20346-phobos-moon.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20346-phobos-moon.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20346-phobos-moon.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Phobos<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20345-deimos-moon.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20345-deimos-moon.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20345-deimos-moon.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Deimos<\/a>, partially eclipsing the sun. This appears to be Phobos \u2014 the larger of the pair \u2014 eclipsing <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the sun<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>    <a id=\"elk-82b34042-9b3b-11f1-8be8-b3d901a3d369\"\/>Why is it incredible? <\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-82b340ba-9b3b-11f1-94bc-016801aed819\">So far, we humans have only directly had vantage points on <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a>, in Earth orbit and on the moon. We have not yet landed humans on Mars, and it remains unclear how long it might be before that happens.<\/p>\n<p>But robotic explorers like Perseverance allow us to travel where we can&#8217;t go ourselves. Such travelers have taken us into interstellar space and all throughout our <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar system<\/a>. From <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/48-saturn-the-solar-systems-major-ring-bearer.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/48-saturn-the-solar-systems-major-ring-bearer.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/48-saturn-the-solar-systems-major-ring-bearer.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Saturn<\/a>&#8216;s rings to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/41-neptune-the-other-blue-planet-in-our-solar-system.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/41-neptune-the-other-blue-planet-in-our-solar-system.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/41-neptune-the-other-blue-planet-in-our-solar-system.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Neptune<\/a>&#8216;s distant, icy neighborhood, robotic probes have allowed humanity&#8217;s reach to stretch far through the cosmos.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>And thanks to Perseverance and its two &#8220;eyes,&#8221; the two Mastcam-Z cameras located high on its mast, we can travel right to the surface of Mars, look up and see an alien solar eclipse.
