Reflecting on the experience in a conversation with former First Lady Michelle Obama, Staley described the pressure she faced early in her Olympic coaching role. <\/a><\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m the Black coach, first time Black coach,\u201d she said. \u201cSo I experienced something I\u2019ve never experienced in my life. Like I was paralyzed. Like what? I can\u2019t do this. And you feel the pressure because you got to perform. You can\u2019t be the one that dethrones the success that USA has had.\u201d<\/p>\n After exhibition losses<\/a> to Australia and the WNBA All-Stars, Staley decided she had to \u201cdo it my way.\u201d That meant leaning heavily on A\u2019ja Wilson, who was making her Olympic debut.<\/p>\n \u201cIf A\u2019ja Wilson is the player that I\u2019m most comfortable with, well, I want to put her in the starting lineup and we\u2019re just going to pivot and go from there,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n She called that choice her \u201csafe house\u201d and committed to building the team\u2019s approach around it.
