MISHAWAKA, Ind. (WSBT) \u2014 Firefighters now say NIPSCO just capped a major gas leak in Mishawaka.<\/p>\n
The gas leak was capped and stopped at around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.<\/p>\n
12th Street has reopened, and businesses can return to normal.<\/p>\n
People have been cleared to return to the businesses and homes, but there is still work to do to fix the impacted line.<\/p>\n
The 10-inch gas main was leaking at 12th Street, between Merrifield Avenue and Byrkit Street.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere was a large gas line that was hit on 12th Street today. It was a 10-inch gas main, I was told, and we are just out here trying to keep the scene secure, keep it safe for the crews on scene to work,” said Jordan Rutherford, Mishawaka Fire Department.<\/p>\n
Traffic was diverted, and businesses were closed along 12th Street on Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n
NIPSCO crews worked to crimp the natural gas line, closer to Byrkit Street.<\/p>\n
The main leak was farther down the road, closer to Merrifield Avenue on 12th Street.<\/p>\n

NIPSCO worked for hours to shut off natural gas to the leak further down the street.<\/p>\n
Mishawaka Fire has been out since 9 a.m., working on evacuations and efforts to keep the area safe.<\/p>\n
Businesses along 12th Street had to be evacuated, and people in private homes were asked to shelter in place for the time being.<\/p>\n
NIPSCO told WSBT 22, \u201cOnce repairs are complete, re-lights for the impacted customers will begin. NIPSCO crews will arrive carrying company-issued identification to conduct the re-light process for each customer.\u201d<\/p>\n
“There shouldn’t be any hazard to the public at this point. You might smell some gas in the area, which is to be expected. There is a large main line along 12th Street that is leaking, so got some calls about gas smells in the area, which is pretty normal. If there’s any questions, please do call 9-1-1,” said Rutherford.<\/p>\n
18 customers were impacted.<\/p>\n
The work is still ongoing, but there is no active leak.<\/p>\n
