The Washington Wizards\u2019 Cam Whitmore experiment has ended after one disappointing season.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, as part of a multi-team trade<\/a>, the Wizards agreed to send the scoring-minded 6-foot-7 wing\/forward to the Cleveland Cavaliers and received guard Tre Mann, a 2027 second-round pick from the LA Clippers and cash, league sources \u2014 speaking anonymously because the deal has not been completed \u2014 said.<\/p>\n

The move addresses some of the positional imbalance on the Wizards\u2019 wing-heavy roster. Whitmore had minimal chance of cracking the playing rotation on the wings after the Wizards selected AJ Dybantsa with the No. 1 pick in the draft and Will Riley showed promise as a rookie. Kyshawn George, Bilal Coulibaly, Tre Johnson and Justin Champagnie were also ahead of Whitmore, 22, on the depth chart.<\/p>\n

Mann, 25, will provide depth at point guard behind starter Trae Young and alongside combo guard Bub Carrington.<\/p>\n

Wizards general manager Will Dawkins was one of the Oklahoma City Thunder\u2019s vice presidents of basketball operations in 2021 and oversaw the Thunder\u2019s draft work when the team picked Mann 18th out of the University of Florida. Mann spent his first two full NBA seasons with the Thunder, which happened to be Dawkins\u2019 final two seasons in Oklahoma City before he joined Washington. Mann appeared in 127 regular-season games during that stretch.<\/p>\n

Whitmore appeared in 21 games last season before coach Brian Keefe benched him in early December because of Whitmore\u2019s lack of passing on offense and lackadaisical defense<\/a>. The Wizards were going to give Whitmore every opportunity to regain his spot in the playing rotation, but doctors discovered a dangerous blood clot in one of Whitmore\u2019s shoulders, and the ailment forced Whitmore to miss the remainder of the season.<\/p>\n

Whitmore is healthy now after a strenuous rehabilitation regimen.<\/p>\n

When the Wizards traded two second-round picks to the Houston Rockets for Whitmore last summer, team officials regarded the move as a low-risk, potentially high-reward move. No one doubted Whitmore\u2019s natural gifts \u2014 his size, his power, his speed, his scoring and his skill with the basketball \u2014 and team officials hoped the Washington-area native would excel in a lower-pressure environment and benefit from having family and friends nearby.<\/p>\n

As part of Wednesday\u2019s deal, sources said, the Wizards will receive a second-round pick in 2027 via the Clippers that will be the second-most favorable of the following:<\/p>\n

(a) the more favorable of Golden State\u2019s and Phoenix\u2019s second-round picks,
(b) the most favorable of Houston\u2019s, Indiana\u2019s, Miami\u2019s and Oklahoma City\u2019s second-round picks and
(c) Philadelphia\u2019s second-round pick.<\/p>\n

The Wizards also included Juju Reese, a big man on a two-way contract, in the multi-team trade, sending him to the Denver Nuggets.<\/p>\n

Reese likely became expendable after the Wizards acquired the draft rights to second-round pick Felix Okpara, a 6-foot-11 big man.
