A marine biologist on a dive in\u00a0Australia\u00a0swam upon a gummy shark pup, swimming just beneath the water\u2019s surface.<\/p>\n
This rare moment was captured on video in mid-August, on a dive in Port Phillip Bay, Victoria.<\/p>\n
The video showed the teeny tiny shark swimming in front of the diver with the\u00a0sun<\/a>\u00a0shining through the water.<\/p>\n The diver, Sheree Marris, who is also a marine biologist, said it was a gummy shark.<\/p>\n Gummy sharks are native to Australia, and can grow to be 5 feet long.<\/p>\n Young gummy sharks can be prey to other larger shark species.<\/p>\n According to the\u00a0Australian Fisheries Management Authorities<\/a>, gummy sharks are not overfished.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cThis cutie patootie was really little,\u201d Marris said.<\/p>\n Marine biologist Sheree Marris spotted a rare gummy shark pup during a dive in Australia\u2019s Port Phillip Bay. @shereemarris via Storyful<\/p>\n Newborn gummy sharks typically measure around 12 to 14 inches in length, Marris told Storyful News.<\/p>\n In the video, Marris shows the little shark swimming away, before panning the camera to herself and motioning with her fingers that the shark was small.<\/p>\n The next clip shows Marris swimming right next to the shark before the video ends.<\/p>\n The tiny newborn, measuring 12 to 14 inches, receives no parental care after hatching. @shereemarris via Storyful<\/p>\n \u201cThis cutie patootie was really little,\u201d Marris said. @shereemarris via Storyful<\/p>\n Gummy sharks are on their own after being born, with no parental care, Marris said.<\/p>\n There are about 180 shark species that live in Australian waters<\/a>, most of which are not a threat to people.<\/p>\n
