Two years after Marc Lore took over as majority owner and governor of the Minnesota Timberwolves, he has sold most of his interest in the NBA franchise as well as the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx. <\/p>\n
Per ESPN’s Shams Charania, Marc Stad will take over as controlling owner of the T-Wolves and Lynx after buying a majority of Lore’s interest at a $4.5 billion valuation. <\/p>\n
Stad, Lore and Alex Rodriguez confirmed the sale in a statement released on Friday:<\/p>\n
The Timberwolves sale marks the ninth time an NBA franchise has been sold since 2022, including the deal that saw Lore and Alex Rodriguez purchase Minnesota from Glen Taylor.<\/p>\n
It was less than two weeks ago that Mark Walter\u00a0agreed to sell<\/a>\u00a0the Los Angeles Lakers to Bob Iger and Joshua Kushner at a $12.5 billion valuation. Walter’s purchase of the franchise had just been approved by the NBA board of governors in October 2025.<\/p>\n Other NBA franchises that have been sold during this period include the Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks, Charlotte Hornets, Boston Celtics and Portland Trail Blazers.<\/p>\n The Lore-Rodriguez purchase of the Timberwolves was\u00a0officially approved<\/a>\u00a0by the NBA in June 2025. Their approval came after a prolonged battle with Taylor, who\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0in March 2024 that Lore and Rodriguez lost the financial backing needed to make their final payment required to claim majority ownership of the franchise.<\/p>\n Lore and Rodriguez faced questions about their long-term financial ability to maintain a competitive NBA roster. Adrian Wojnarowski, then of ESPN,\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0in April 2024 that part of Taylor’s concern with selling to them was a budget projection for the 2024-25 season from Lore and Rodriguez that would have cut $27 million in payroll to get under the luxury tax.<\/p>\n In the lone season with Lore and Rodriguez as controlling owners, the Timberwolves had the\u00a0third-highest payroll<\/a>\u00a0in the NBA.<\/p>\n
