A bear died after getting trapped in an unlocked car in Colorado Springs<\/p>\n

Colorado Parks and Wildlife said bears are seeking human food at higher rates due to dwindling natural sources<\/p>\n

“Providing food \u2014 intentionally or by negligently leaving attractants unsecured \u2014 can make a dangerous situation worse,” CPW wrote<\/p>\n

A bear has died after it became stuck inside a car.<\/p>\n

In Colorado Springs, a bear weighing roughly 250 pounds climbed into an unlocked car and chaotically looted the vehicle before getting stuck inside, CBS News<\/a> reported, citing Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Unable to get out, the bear later died.<\/p>\n

The bear wasn’t discovered for several days, the outlet reported.<\/p>\n

News of the bear’s tragic death comes days after CPW issued a fresh warning<\/a> to residents and visitors to be “especially vigilant” about securing trash and food sources, as these are likely to attract bears. Currently, bears in the area are seeking higher amounts of human food because their natural foods are dwindling.<\/p>\n

“As natural foods become harder to find, bears may travel farther and take greater risks to eat the calories they need,” CPW’s statement read. “That can bring them into neighborhoods and other developed areas where trash, bird seed, pet food, barbecue grills and other human food sources provide an easy meal.”<\/p>\n

“Providing food \u2014 intentionally or by negligently leaving attractants unsecured \u2014 can make a dangerous situation worse,” CPW added, as it teaches bears that “homes and neighborhoods provide an easier source of calories.”<\/p>\n

Furthermore, frequent and sustained interaction with human spaces can diminish a bear’s natural hesitancy to be around people, per CPW. It’s then that bears may damage property or become safety threats.<\/p>\n

A lack of natural food also comes as black bears prepare to enter hyperphagia, a natural phase in which they spend up to 20 hours a day looking for food and fortifying their fat reserves for the coming colder months.<\/p>\n

To help residents and visitors stay safe, CPW launched a website for information on Living with Bears<\/a>, which includes not feeding or approaching bears; securing food, garbage and recycling; removing bird feeders when bears are active; not leaving pet food outside; cleaning and storing away grills and alerting neighbors to any bear activity.<\/p>\n
