{"id":821505,"date":"2026-08-21T23:46:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-21T23:46:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/821505\/"},"modified":"2026-08-21T23:46:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-21T23:46:09","slug":"for-comedy-writers-of-hacks-the-comeback-saying-goodbye-is-tough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/821505\/","title":{"rendered":"For Comedy Writers Of Hacks &#038; The Comeback, Saying Goodbye Is Tough"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tSaying goodbye is never easy, particularly if you\u2019ve played a character for over 20 years, however intermittently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tLisa Kudrow knows this well, after her and Michael Patrick King, the co-creators of <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/hbo\/\" id=\"auto-tag_hbo\" data-tag=\"hbo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">HBO<\/a>\u2019s The Comeback, said farewell to Valerie Cherish, a character that started at The Groundlings and was first turned into a comedy series in 2005.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe show ended its third season with Cherish doing a piece to camera, helmed by Jane Benson, played by Laura Silverman. The shot fades from black-and-white to color with Jane applauding how she\u2019s fought for herself, against the big bad A.I. \u201cWhat an evolution you\u2019ve had,\u201d Benson says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tCherish does not agree with the premise. \u201cI think you have to agree to be humiliated, and I never signed up,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tSpeaking with Deadline at <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/sublime-primetime\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sublime-primetime\" data-tag=\"sublime-primetime\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sublime Primetime<\/a>, an event hosted by the Writers Guild Foundation, Kudrow said she\u2019s had seasoned actors ask her how she\u2019s able to play such a character. \u201cValerie spun everything but believed it so it was pain-free and then realized that she does not accept humiliation. Oh my god, that\u2019s an option? It was so revelatory,\u201d she said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cI also think Lisa wanted to make sure emotionally that we left Valerie with dignity,\u201d added King.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tBut it wasn\u2019t easy to film. The pair shot the scene on the last day of production.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cIt was emotional,\u201d added Kudrow. \u201cWe were on the Friends stage where I said goodbye to the most important 10 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cWe thought it\u2019d be really great to film the last scene last on the last day, so that Friends and The Comeback is all ending on the exact same moment for Lisa, and then it\u2019s one take. We were nuts. It was really, really emotional,\u201d added King.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Lisa Kudrow, at last night\u2019s \u2018Sublime Primetime\u2019 event with <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/WGAWest?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">@WGAWest<\/a> featuring the Emmy-nominated Drama &amp; Comedy writers, on playing Valerie Cherish on \u2018The Comeback\u2019 and what Cherish thinks of \u2018Friends\u2019: \u201cShe\u2019s not impressed with the woman who played Phoebe\u201d\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/rzCeVue1b5\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">pic.twitter.com\/rzCeVue1b5<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Deadline (@DEADLINE) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DEADLINE\/status\/2090923845020422327?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">August 21, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe pair were joined on stage by the creators of <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/hacks\/\" id=\"auto-tag_hacks\" data-tag=\"hacks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hacks<\/a> \u2013 Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs and Jen Statsky \u2013 who also had an emotional reaction to their show ending after five seasons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe final season, which ended in May, sees Jean Smart\u2019s Deborah Vance, tell Ava, played by Hannah Einbinder, that she\u2019s got cancer and she\u2019s going to travel to Switzerland for assisted suicide. But first, she wants a trip and after riffing on jokes about dying, Vance changes her mind and asks Ava to help her write another hour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tDowns said that the group was \u201csad\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAniello said, \u201cI feel like I\u2019ve almost been not admitting this. Now, I really am to a whole room of people, but like I desperately miss the characters, in a way that feels kind of pathetic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tShe added that the <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/08\/jean-smart-hannah-einbinder-hacks-live-deborah-ava-spinoffs-1237031337\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">live event that they put together \u2013 Smart and Einbinder\u2019s last tour of duty as the characters<\/a> \u2013 was a way to keep the band together. \u201cI think part of the reason we did that is just because we were kind of desperate to keep writing for them, and so it was really part of the grieving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tStatsky admitted that it was hard to say goodbye. \u201cIt\u2019s very hard to say goodbye to the people we made the show with, and [given] it was the first show the three of us created, we also very aware of what a privilege it is to have a show because to make a comedy right now is so unfortunately hard, but we also know it\u2019s a privilege that we got to do it for five seasons, and so to say goodbye to that is really hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe final episode was also a full-circle moment for the trio. They had rented an AirBnb in Paris in 2019 \u2013 where Statsky was filming the finale of The Good Place \u2013 and they realized they were shooting one of the final seasons on the same street, seven years later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cWe knew the show was about the grist between these two women of different generations, and that ultimately the thing that they would struggle with at the end would be life and death. It\u2019s a story about these two women who are so different and don\u2019t want to have anything to do with each other, who in the end can\u2019t be without each other,\u201d Downs said. \u201cWe did want to tell that story, but it was scary even until, honestly, the week before it aired. We were like, should we have ended at episode nine? Should we have gone out on a big happy thing? But yeah, it was a process getting there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/the-comeback\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-comeback\" data-tag=\"the-comeback\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Comeback<\/a> and Hacks are both nominated for an Emmy in the Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, where they are up against Abbott Elementary, The Chair Company, Widow\u2019s Bay and Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat.<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Saying goodbye is never easy, particularly if you\u2019ve played a character for over 20 years, however intermittently.
