NEW YORK \u2014\u00a0Ryan Weathers threw a 78.4 mph sweeper, one of the slowest pitches he\u2019s thrown this season, and immediately called for the New York Yankees\u2019 trainer.<\/p>\n
After a brief evaluation on the mound with the trainer and manager Aaron Boone, Weathers\u2019 day against the Toronto Blue Jays was over. He was replaced by Yerry De los Santos in the middle of an at-bat, due to what the Yankees termed left forearm discomfort.<\/p>\n
Weathers has emerged as one of the Yankees\u2019 best breakouts this season. He has pitched to a 3.60 ERA and has been one of MLB\u2019s best strikeout artists after the Yankees acquired him from the Miami Marlins in January.<\/p>\n
Weathers has already eclipsed a career-high in innings pitched this season with 137 1\/3. Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake recently told The Athletic that they were keeping a close watch on how his body was responding.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think the innings bother us so much right now,\u201d Blake said earlier this month. \u201cIt\u2019s something we\u2019ve got to be aware of because it\u2019s uncharted territory. But I feel like the routine has gotten better, both in the training and weight room but also in the throwing program and his bullpens. I just feel like he understands how to monitor the workload a little bit better. I think he feels better at this point of the year than maybe historically he has. That being said, we still got to be smart about not running this kid to 180 to 200 innings.\u201d<\/p>\n
If Weathers must miss time on the injured list, the likeliest Yankees call-up could be Elmer Rodr\u00edguez, who has already made four spot starts this season.<\/p>\n
The ramifications of Weathers potentially missing time are major. Max Fried is already on the injured list with a left elbow bone bruise, the same injury that forced him to miss two-plus months. The Yankees are optimistic that Fried could return from the injured list as soon as he\u2019s eligible, but it\u2019s not ideal that he is dealing with another elbow injury.<\/p>\n
If every starter stayed healthy heading into the postseason, Weathers would likely be pushed to the bullpen. After not adding a reliever at the trade deadline, the Yankees were banking on Weathers and Will Warren moving into the bullpen and becoming high-leverage arms. Not adding more pitching at the deadline was always a plan that could backfire, and it\u2019s already been on display in the weeks since the deadline passed.<\/p>\n
