An actual live concert with the vampire Lestat. And for all you FROM fans, there’s a new movie with Faraway Trees out. All these and more can be found in this weekend’s edition of your friendly neighborhood streaming guide.

I’ve been so busy I really haven’t been watching a lot of TV or movies lately, though a group of us went to Mad Max: Fury Road because it was playing on the nice, big “Cine1” screen at the local theater here. It was so cool to see it on the big screen again, and in a much nicer theater than the one I saw it in when it first came out. This remains to me one of the greatest, purest, most thrilling action movies of all time. A singular work. Nothing has ever been and nothing will ever be quite like Fury Road. George Miller is a genius and I wish someone would give him a couple hundred million dollars to do another preposterous movie. (You can get Fury Road and the surprisingly great prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga as a bundle for cheap on Amazon at the moment, by the way).

I did catch up on Reacher and I’ll have my review out for that soon – spoiler: I’m not impressed – and I keep trying to make myself watch Dead City but it’s just torture. There are so many ways I could be spending my time that are better than that absolute garbage show. If I had a magic wand I’d replace everyone working on that entire franchise with people who have actual talent.

Unfortunately, outside a handful of the actors, and the entire makeup and SFX team, it’s clear that talent is in desperately short supply. I cannot for the life of me understand how AMC can keep bankrolling this disaster of a franchise – this shambling dead thing – except that clearly the issues with talent go all the way to the top where the decisions are being made. What a shame. Every time I catch a scene from the first few seasons I’m in awe of how spectacularly The Walking Dead collapsed into mediocrity and worse. Everyone involved with its downfall should be ashamed.

I will have a recap for the second episode of Lanterns up on Sunday evening. I’m hoping it’s better than the first, especially because I really do like the cast a lot – Kyle Chandler is particularly good, and Garret Dillahunt is always marvelous. We’ll see if the story can keep up with the talented cast.

As I do every week, I’ve scoured the internet for the best TV shows and movies streaming on Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV, Disney+ and beyond for you to watch this weekend. The Pogues hunt the Blue Crown and Groff one last time. Created by Josh Pate, Jonas Pate and Shannon Burke, who also write the finale. All 10 episodes dropped Thursday, August 20, a change from Season 4’s split release. Episode 50 closes out the series.

Why You Should Watch: I’ll be honest, I know this is a popular show and I know that five seasons on Netflix must mean it’s doing something very, very right – but I have never watched a single episode. There isn’t a score on RT yet but critics and audiences seem divided on this one and how it ends. If you’re a fan, let me know what you think of the final season.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia – Season 18 (FX / Hulu)

What It’s About: The Gang — Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, Rob Mac, Kaitlin Olson and Danny DeVito — return to Paddy’s Pub for a 10-episode run that includes inheritance scams, tent encampments, workplace automation, neurodivergence, conspiracy theories, a Renaissance Faire, and a Little League sponsorship. What could go wrong? The season premiered this past Monday, August 17 with a two-episode drop. Weekly episodes land on Mondays with the finale airing on October 12. Season 18 is currently sitting at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Why You Should Watch: To be fair, I’m late to the game on Always Sunny, so I’m way way behind on this show and just put on episodes whenever I need a dose of hilarity in my life. Sometimes I end up binging three or four or five because life is filled with tragedy and the Gang always lifts my spirits. So why should you watch? First, because it will bring you joy. Second, because you’ll be like “there but for the grace of God go I.”

The Audacity – Season 1 (Netflix)

What It’s About: A shady data-mining company is collapsing, so CEO and founder (and all-around prick) Duncan Park (Billy Magnussen) tries to manipulate the market in his favor; when it backfires, his therapist JoAnne Felder (Sarah Goldberg) gets sucked into the schemes. Created by Jonathan Glatzer, with Rob Corddry, Simon Helberg, Zach Galifianakis, Lucy Punch, Meaghan Rath and Paul Adelstein. Originally an AMC series, all eight episodes hit Netflix Wednesday, August 19.

Why You Should Watch: I watched the first three or four episodes of this show and then sort of . . . forgot about it? I was curious because Jonathan Glatzer worked on the wonderful HBO series, Succession, and another Succession-like business drama sounded fun, but this one seemed to be trying too hard and not really landing. I might go back and finish it at some point. Critics gave this an 80% on RT but audiences were harsher, with just 55% on the Popcornmeter.

Average Joe – Season 2 (Paramount+)

What It’s About: Joe Washington (Deon Cole) wants a fresh start after surviving Season 1, but a new threat to his family drives him and his crew from Pittsburgh to Cape Town, where they’re hunted by criminals, assassins and bounty hunters. Created by Robb Cullen; also stars Malcolm Barrett, Cynthia Kaye McWilliams and Michael Trucco. The second season is comprised of eight episodes. The first two dropped on August 19 with weekly releases on Wednesdays. The finale lands September 30.

Why You Should Watch: The first season was well-received (86% on RT) but I didn’t watch this show so I can’t give you my own opinion. The single review on Rotten Tomatoes for S2 is very positive, with critic Brittany Frederick writing, “Average Joe season 2 storms onto Paramount+ with more knockout performances, more absurd humor and more “can you believe that?” moments. It’s a show like no other.”

Conan O’Brien Must Go – Season 3 (HBO Max)

What It’s About: Conan travels overseas to meet listeners he first connected with on his podcast, experiencing local traditions while spending time with the fans who invited him — this season to India, the Philippines, the Netherlands and Morocco. Premieres Friday, August 21 at 9 pm ET on HBO and HBO Max with four episodes airing weekly on Fridays, and the finale on September 11.

Why You Should Watch: Conan O’Brien is just one of the funniest, most likable people in Hollywood and basically anything he does is worth watching just because he’s such a fun guy. If you like humorous travel shows, check it out. The series holds 88% critics / 84% audience and has won two Emmys.

The Vampire Lestat: One Night Only Live (AMC+)

What It’s About: A concert special taped live at the Beacon Theatre in Manhattan on June 2, with Sam Reid performing six original songs by composer Daniel Hart in character as Lestat. It streams on AMC+ Sunday, August 23 — a one-off special, though the show The Vampire Lestat has a 100% Certified Fresh RT score.

Why You Should Watch: I mean, even if you don’t watch these Vampire shows (this one and Interview With A Vampire) this sounds pretty awesome and fun. Honestly, it’s just a very clever idea given the whole premise of the series. I really ought to watch these. I think AMC kind of just burned me so badly with The Walking Dead that it’s hard to trust anything they release now. We’ve come a long ways from the days of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul (though AMC didn’t make those shows directly like it does TWD, it just aired and funded them).

Sterling Point (Prime Video)

What It’s About: 17-year-old Annie Jacobson (Ella Rubin), raised in New York with her twin brother (Keen Ruffalo) and adoptive father (Jay Duplass), inherits her mysterious grandfather’s island in Canada and finds new friends, romance and family secrets. Created by Megan Park (My Old Ass), co-showrun with Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage; Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Bo Bragason co-star. All eight episodes dropped Wednesday, August 5 and I realize I’m almost a month late but I missed it that weekend and then saw it was renewed for a second season and popped it in this weekend’s guide.

Why You Should Watch: Well, it doesn’t exactly sound like my cup of tea but a 90% critic score and an 85% audience score definitely says something!

Bergerac (PBS Masterpiece)

What It’s About: Toby Whithouse’s modern reimagining of the 1980s Jersey-set detective series, with Damien Molony as Jim Bergerac, returning to work after his wife’s death to solve the murder of a member of one of the island’s wealthiest families. Zoë Wanamaker, Philip Glenister, Robert Gilbert, Chloé Sweetlove and Lesley Sharp co-star. All six episodes went up Sunday, August 16 on PBS Passport and the PBS Masterpiece Prime Video Channel, which gives streaming audiences a chance to binge ahead of the linear PBS rollout starting Thursday, October 15.

Why You Should Watch: I haven’t started this one but I thought the trailer looked excellent. The original series ran from 1981 through 1991 and was a pretty big hit in the UK. I’m curious to see how the remake compares.

Hannibal (Netflix)

What It’s About: Bryan Fuller’s psychological thriller, based in part on Thomas Harris’s novels, starring Hugh Dancy as profiler Will Graham and Mads Mikkelsen as Dr. Hannibal Lecter, with Laurence Fishburne, Caroline Dhavernas and Gillian Anderson. All three seasons and 39 episodes landed on Netflix Monday, July 27.

Why You Should Watch: This show reviewed quite well and while I thought it got a little weird and . . . messy at times, it’s really an excellent take on the terrifying and brilliant and charming foodie, Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Mikkelsen is so charming and handsome and creepy and Will Graham pulls out all the stops. It’s very much a bingeable psychological thriller. You know what the worst thing is? Lecter’s cooking made me . . . a bit peckish. He just really knows how to cook!

My Brilliant Career (Netflix)

What It’s About: Sybylla (Philippa Northeast), a restless teenager refuses to conform to the standards of late 19th century rural Australia, is dead set on writing her own story in an era that expects her to find a husband. A new take on Miles Franklin’s novel, with Anna Chancellor as her grandmother and Slow Horses’ Christopher Chung (the Hot Rod! The Rodster! Roddy Ho!) as the rancher, Harry Beecham, who catches her eye. Adapted by Liz Doran. All six episodes dropped Thursday, August 13.

Why You Should Watch: I don’t think this sounds at all like my kind of TV show except for two things: I loved The Man From Snowy River and have a huge fascination with Australia, so romance and Australia and period drama – okay, I lied, this is right up my alley. But mostly I want to see Christopher Chung in a romantic lead role. After five seasons of Slow Horses, this might break my brain!

Abbot Elementary – Season 5 (HBO Max)

What It’s About: Quinta Brunson’s Emmy-winning mockumentary about the titualar underfunded Philadelphia public school, with Tyler James Williams, Janelle James, Lisa Ann Walter, Chris Perfetti and Sheryl Lee Ralph. The 22-episode season aired on ABC from October 1, 2025 through April 22, 2026; it arrives complete on HBO Max Saturday, August 22.

Why You Should Watch: Once again, if you’re looking for bite-sized comic relief and enjoy mockumentary style shows (a la The Office) this is probably right up your alley. I’ve only watched a few episodes, and I thought it was fine. I’m kind of an education nerd so this looked enjoyable but then I started watching A.P. Bio instead, which is like the inverse of Dead Poets Society. In a fun way. (Wouldn’t it have been grand if Robin Williams had played a similar role at some point).

Update: Talamasca: The Secret Order – Season 1 (Netflix)

What It’s About: Guy Anatole (Nicholas Denton) is on the cusp of graduating law school when he’s approached by a representative of the Talamasca, a secret society that tracks down and contains the witches, vampires and other supernatural beings of Anne Rice’s Immortal Universe. He joins as a psychic recruit and, through the spy agency, uncovers his own family’s hidden ties to the supernatural world.

Why You Should Watch: I haven’t watched any of AMC’s Immortal Universe stuff, though I’m sorely tempted to give Interview With A Vampire a shot (the 90s movie was okay thanks to Tom Cruise’s enthusiastic performance, but Brad Pitt really phoned it in) if only because The Vampire Lestat looks like so much fun. In any case, if you’re into those shows, you might as well watch this one – even if it only has a 61% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

New Movies To Watch This WeekendMother Mary (HBO Max)

What It’s About: David Lowery writes and directs Anne Hathaway as a world-famous pop icon preparing a long-delayed return to the stage, whose old wounds reopen when she reconnects with her former best friend and costume designer Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel). Original songs by Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff and FKA twigs — who appears alongside Hunter Schafer and Kaia Gerber. Streaming on HBO Max from Friday, August 21 after an April theatrical run.

Why You Should Watch: With a 70% RT score and 5.5/10 on IMDb, I can’t really strongly recommend this to you unless you really like these actors (Anne Hathaway is apparently in all the movies this summer) and the music. David Lowery also directed The Green Knight which I enjoyed a great deal, but of course he also did the new Peter Pan live-action film so . . . hit or miss, I guess.

Icefall (Prime Video)

What It’s About: A young Indigenous game warden (Cara Jade Myers) arrests a notorious poacher (Joel Kinnaman), only to learn he knows where a plane full of cash crashed in a frozen lake; when criminals and corrupt cops close in, the pair have to escape across melting ice. Directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky, with Danny Huston and Graham Greene in one of his final roles.

Why You Should Watch: Two things. First, this movie has gotten very middling reviews and it looks kind of stupid. But also: Joel Kinnaman. I just love the guy in everything, whether he’s a good guy a bad guy or something in-between. He was so great in Altered Carbon and The Killing and played a really fascinating nemesis in Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole on Netflix.

The Christophers (Hulu)

What It’s About: Steven Soderbergh directs Ed Solomon’s script: Julian Sklar (Ian McKellen), a broke former star of London’s 60s/70s pop art scene, hasn’t painted in decades, so his estranged children (James Corden, Jessica Gunning) hire art restorer and former forger Lori (Michaela Coel) to pose as an assistant and get at eight unfinished canvases. Hits Hulu Saturday, August 22.

Why You Should Watch: The second Michaela Coel movie on this list and the strongest when it comes to Rotten Tomatoes scores with 95% critics and 87% audiences. Not too shabby! Soderbergh has done some great movies in the past, like Erin Brockovich and Ocean’s 11, and I’ll watch anything with the One True Gandalf / Magneto in it.

New Movies In Theaters This WeekendMutiny

What It’s About: Have you seen a Jason Statham movie before? Then you know what it’s about.

Why You Should Watch: You probably shouldn’t. This is actually Statham’s worst-reviewed action flick since Expend4bles, a movie that uses a “4” in place of one of its “a’s”. Ouch. I admire the hell out of Statham for his ability to keep cranking out the same movie over and over again and make a living doing it, and the guy is really the action star of our time, but this does not look good.

Insidious: Out of the Further

What It’s About: Amelia Eve plays Gemma, a young mother raising her daughter in her childhood home, who discovers she can travel into The Further — and worse, bring what lives there back into the real world. Jacob Chase directs the sixth franchise entry, with Brandon Perea, Maisie Richardson-Sellers and a returning Lin Shaye; Blumhouse and Atomic Monster produce for Sony.

Why You Should Watch: Okay, Mutiny has a 49% on Rotten Tomatoes. This latest Insidious film has a 67%, the best of the entire franchise – none of which I’ve ever watched. But that’s good! Usually these types of horror movie franchises get worse and worse with time.

The Magic Faraway Tree

What It’s About: Adapted from Enid Blyton, it follows Polly (Claire Foy), Tim (Andrew Garfield) and their three children as they relocate to the remote English countryside, where the kids find a magical tree and its eccentric residents: Moonface (Nonso Anozie), Silky (Nicola Coughlan), Dame Washalot (Jessica Gunning) and Saucepan Man (Dustin Demri-Burns). Directed by Ben Gregor from a Simon Farnaby script; Rebecca Ferguson and Jennifer Saunders also star. This released in the UK in March and lands in US theaters Friday.

Why You Should Watch: Okay guys, guys, gals, ladies, gentlemen: First things first, this looks like a very fun family movie. Second thing: I actually mentioned the book this is based on when I wrote up my theory about the MGM show FROM and how it’s all about fairies! We’ve come full circle, people. Full, flat time circle. The movie has an 87% RT score and is planned as a trilogy. Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy are both great. This is probably one I’ll hold off on until streaming, however.

TV Shows Currently Streaming WeeklyReacher – Season 4 (Prime Video)

What It’s About: Season 4 of Reacher adapts Lee Child’s Gone Tomorrow: a distraught woman’s death on a Philadelphia subway pulls Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) into a conspiracy involving the Pentagon and an international terror cell. Three episodes dropped August 12, with weekly releases through the September 16 finale. Amazon will release all eight episodes of the spinoff Neagley (starring Maria Sten) the same day as the finale.

Why You Should Watch: Season 1 remains the gold standard when it comes to Reacher, but at least Season 3 was a lot better than the truly atrocious second season of this action-crime-mystery-ish adaptation of the over-the-top Lee Child books (of which I’ve read about nine or so). Season 4 is . . . oh I hate to say it, but it’s also pretty bad. I have a review in the works and a video review in the works and I’ll update this post with links one they’re done.

Lanterns – Season 1 (HBO Max)

What It’s About: DC’s True Detective-style take on Green Lantern: rookie John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and veteran Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) investigate a Nebraska murder that opens onto something much larger, told across two timelines. Kelly Macdonald is Sheriff Kerry, Ulrich Thomsen plays Sinestro, Laura Linney a Guardian of the Universe, and Nathan Fillion reprises Guy Gardner from Superman. Co-created by Chris Mundy (Ozark), Damon Lindelof, and Tom King. Premieres Sunday, August 16 at 9pm, then weekly across eight episodes, with the finale on October 4. See the full release schedule and time zones right here.

Why You Should Watch: I’ve watched the first episode of Lanterns so far and it’s fine. Nothing special, not bad, I’m curious about the mystery though I think they did a pretty terrible job at actually setting that mystery up in the pilot. You can read my review of the Season 1 premiere, and I’ll be recapping and reviewing episodes weekly on Sunday evenings. I’m hopeful but I think the True Detective comparisons were a mistake.

Furious (Hulu)

What It’s About: An eight-episode crime drama created by Elizabeth Meriwether, loosely inspired by the 1987 film Black Widow. FBI agent Alice Black (Emmy Rossum) hunts a calculating female serial killer played by Lola Petticrew (who I first saw in Say Nothing, I believe). As their paths converge the line between justice and revenge gets blurry. Scoot McNairy, Quincy Tyler Bernstine and Jake Lacy also star.

Why You Should Watch: I have decidedly mixed feelings about this show now that I’m five episodes deep. I think part of this is marketing. The show is described as a rookie FBI agent hunting down a female serial killer, but it’s really about a revenge killer and abuse and sex trafficking and I guess I was just hoping it wouldn’t be so predictable. The video above is me talking about how far too often modern shows and movies give female serial killers a “pass” by justifying their murders, when it would be more interesting to make them more . . . evil. Men shouldn’t get to have all the fun. Still, cat-and-mouse serial killer detective shows are my guilty pleasure so I’ll be watching this on Monday nights. The finale will arrive furiously on August 31.

The Shards (Hulu)

What It’s About: Ryan Murphy (Glee, The Politician, etc) adapts the Bret Easton Ellis novel of the same name for FX/Hulu. Set in Los Angeles in 1981, The Shards follows a 17-year-old fictionalized Bret Easton Ellis (Igby Rigney) through his senior year at the elite Buckley prep school, where the arrival of enigmatic transfer student Robert Mallory (Homer Gere) coincides with the killings of a serial murderer known as The Trawler. The show drops new episodes on Wednesdays with a September 9 finale.

Why You Should Watch: I’m not really sure, if we’re being honest. The promo images of young people in the 80s in swimsuits make this look like a show for young people and I’m not a young man anymore. The reviews aren’t great (55% / 35% audience and critic scores) and I suppose I’m not really a big Bret Easton Ellis guy. I mean, I enjoyed the movie American Psycho, but I never read the book! Maybe I should do that instead of watching this show.

The Walking Dead: Dead City – Season 3 (AMC+)

What It’s About: The Walking Dead: Dead City returns with an eight-episode season 3, with Lauren Cohan as Maggie Rhee and Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan returning, now working alongside Perlie Armstrong (Gaius Charles) to build a “functioning” community in post-apocalyptic Manhattan. The fragile alliance is tested by newcomer Renata (Aimee Garcia), her doctor brother Luis (Raúl Castillo), and loner Dillard (Jimmi Simpson of Westworld fame). New showrunner Seth Hoffman, a Walking Dead veteran writer and former co-executive producer on the original series, is taking over this season. New episodes drop Sundays, running through September 13.

Why You Should Watch: I don’t think this show should exist, quite frankly, and after watching the Season 3 premiere, I not only wrote a scathing review, I made a scathing video to go with it, which you can watch above. It’s not good, folks, but I genuinely hope that it gets better because there are other ways I could be spending my Sunday evenings. Update: I watched about five minutes of the second episode and turned it off and I haven’t been able to come back. I think maybe you need alcohol to enjoy this show, or to even enjoy hate-watching this show, and I don’t drink anymore.

Fightland (Starz)

What It’s About: On the night Maduka “Duke” Kilroy (Howard Charles) becomes world heavyweight champion, an assault leaves his brother dead and lands him in a U.S. prison for eight years. Out and back in London, he sets out to destroy the empire of criminal kingpin and former promoter Kingsley Marshall (Nicholas Pinnock), the man he blames — complicated by the fact that Kingsley has vanished and his wife Joy (Deborah Ayorinde) is the love of Duke’s life. Charles Babalola and Anita-Joy Uwajeh co-star. New episodes drop Fridays with the season finale landing on September 25.

Why You Should Watch: I’m a few weeks late to this – it premiered on Starz on July 31. In any case, it’s co-produced by rapper Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, marking his first international series. It’s a pretty compelling plot and has a reasonably strong 73% on Rotten Tomatoes. Also, boxing. Boxing is fun especially when the boxer in question is beating up criminals in East London.

Ted Lasso – Season 4 (Apple TV)

What It’s About: Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) returns to Richmond to coach a second-division women’s football team in this reboot of the popular Apple TV sports comedy series. Jack Burditt (30 Rock, Modern Family) takes over as showrunner for this new, more estrogen-charged spin on the fish-out-of-water TV show. New episodes drop on Wednesday (Tuesday evening for Apple TV) with ten episodes running through October 7.

Why You Should Watch: Honestly, the reason that Ted Lasso worked so well in the first season was precisely because it was a fish-out-of-water comedy. But a fish can only stay out of water for so long before, well, RIP fish. Ted was an adorable lead and head coach and despite his lack of experience or knowledge of soccer, his remarkable way with people took everyone off guard, including viewers. That affable, mustachioed man was the epitome of “I am rubber and you are glue” and nothing stuck to him. He made you want to believe (like Fox Mulder did back int he day, only about aliens and whatnot).

That rarest work of optimism and hope in a sea of cynicism was perfect in its first season. But it should have been a one-and-done series because it ran out of steam in Season 2 and I didn’t return for Season 3. Let me know if you think Season 4 is worth it or a misfire. I’ve heard mixed things.

Monsters of God (HBO Max)

What It’s About: A five-part HBO documentary series directed by Eric Goode (Tiger King, Chimp Crazy), produced by Goode Films, A24, and Central Pictures. Goode dives into the underworld of exotic animal smuggling, a billion-dollar criminal enterprise driven by obsession over rare species. The docuseries is inspired by and draws from the 2008 nonfiction book, The Lizard King, by Bryan Christy (oddly, not about The Doors frontman, Jim Morrison). New episodes drop Mondays with a September 3 finale.

Why You Should Watch: I really think Lizard King would have been a better name for this series, since it would so quickly evoke Goode’s hit Tiger King, but maybe that name was taken or maybe they worried about the link to The Doors. Either way, with a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score (based on just 10 reviews) this one might be worth checkikng out.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – Season 4 (Paramount+)

Strange New Worlds

Credit: Paramount

What It’s About: The crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise is back for another round of adventures as Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) continues leading his crew across the final frontier. Season 4 picks up after last season’s cliffhanger and sends Pike, Spock, Number One, and the rest of the Enterprise crew on a series of dangerous new missions, from mysterious alien encounters to impossible scientific mysteries, while continuing to build toward the events of Star Trek: The Original Series. The new season is comprised of 10 episodes airing Sundays through September 24

Why You Should Watch: I actually gave up on New Star Trek some time ago, having doggedly tried my best with the JJ Abrams films, Discovery and Picard. And while I’d heard some very positive things about Strange New Worlds, I just couldn’t find the energy to catch up. Maybe someday. I do really like the casting in this series, and Anson Mount is the perfect Pike (though I thought he looked more handsome in the very first episode before he shaved and cut his hair). However, it should be noted that Season 4 has a stellar 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, higher than any previous season. If there is a show that could lure me back to Star Trek, it’s this one.

Silo – Season 3 (Apple TV)

What It’s About: Set in a dystopian future, 10,000 people live in a massive, self-sustaining underground “Silo” comprising 144 levels. Residents are strictly governed by regulations and believe the outside world is toxic, but the protagonist, an engineer named Juliette Nichols, begins to uncover secrets about the Silo’s history and the truth behind their world.

Why You Should Watch: I thought the first season was a bit slow but ended up being a really compelling mystery. For whatever reason, I couldn’t get into Season 2 and still need to catch up. I keep looking at this and Sugar and thinking, I need to watch these shows! But then something else is out that I have to watch. Time is my enemy, and yet the only thing that can defeat my enemy is more of it, which I cannot get. What a conundrum! Season 3 airs weekly on Thursday evenings for a total of 10 episodes, with the finale dropping on September 4.

The Westies – Season 1 Finale (MGM+)

What It’s About: Set in the 1980s, this new MGM+ drama centers on the New York City Irish gang of the same name and the construction of the Jacob Javits Convention Center on the gang’s home turf in Hell’s Kitchen. The Westies have to contend not only with the NYPD and the FBI but also the Italian mafia, which has them outnumbered, outgunned but not necessarily outwitted. The cast is, as the kids say, “stacked” including Titus Welliver, J.K. Simmons, Tom Brittney, Sarah Bolger, Jessica Frances Dukes, Alan Leech and many more.

Why You Should Watch: I’ve seen the first three episodes and keep meaning to write up a proper review, but so far it’s like if Martin Scorsese directed a TV show (with a TV show budget) and I’m enjoying it quite a bit, warts and all. New episodes drop Sundays with the finale airing August 23.

Lioness – Season 3 (Paramount+)

What It’s About: Taylor Sheridan’s Lioness returns for a third season with Zoe Saldaña back as CIA operative Joe McNamara, who finds herself caught up in her most dangerous mission yet. As a sprawling conspiracy threatens both national security and the people she cares about most, Joe is forced to balance her loyalty to the mission with her responsibilities at home. Nicole Kidman, Morgan Freeman, Michael Kelly, Laysla De Oliveira, Genesis Rodriguez, and Dave Annable all return for another season of high-stakes espionage and military action.

Why You Should Watch: You know, I thought the first season of Lioness was pretty excellent military spy thriller fare, and I’m a sucker for that kind of stuff. I’m okay with shows that make Islamic radical terrorists and South American cartels the bad guys and I’m okay with shows that point out that often the bad guys can be right here in the West, too. Taylor Sheridan is a bit more “red-blooded” than a lot of contemporary Hollywood and that’s fine, but I just got kind of sick of the characters in Season 2, so I’m behind. New episodes drop Sundays with the finale landing on September 20.

Ghost in the Shell (Prime Video)

Ghost in the Shell

Credit: Prime Video

What It’s About: Ghost in the Shell has been around forever, but it’s always fun to see a new take on an old classic. The new series, which debuted on Prime Video this past Tuesday, was created by Science Saru (aka Science Monkey), the studio behind the hit Devilman Crybaby and Danadan. The new series is based on the 1989-91 manage of the same name and takes place in the distant future (well, 2029) in a futuristic Japan replete with elite cyborgs, tactical anti-terrorism forces and mysterious hackers. You can also watch the old 1995 movie on Prime Video. A total of 10 episodes will comprise the first season, with the finale airing on September 8.

Why You Should Watch: If you like this anime series, or you’re just into anime in general, this is probably your thing. I found that even though I’ve seen the movie, I was totally lost and confused after the first episode and so I haven’t continued. Maybe someday.

Lucky – Season 1 Finale (Apple TV)

What It’s About: Lucky is a seven-episode crime thriller based on Marissa Stapley’s bestselling novel, starring Anya Taylor-Joy as a former con artist named Lucky, forced back into the criminal underworld after a multimillion-dollar heist goes disastrously wrong and Lucky is betrayed by someone she trusted.

Why You Should Watch: I’ve watched the first episode and enjoyed it quite a bit, though so far it’s not one of those shows I’m telling everyone I know to watch (like Widow’s Bay, for instance). A pretty standard crime thriller so far, but Anya Taylor-Joy is really good so far and I’ll watch just about anything with Timothy Olyphant – even something really bad like Alien: Earth.

The first two episodes are out now with new episodes dropping on Tuesday evenings on Apple TV and the finale airing August 18.

Stuart Fails To Save The Universe (HBO Max)

What It’s About: Stuart Fails to Save the Universe stars Kevin Sussman, reprising his Big Bang Theory role as Stuart. Comic book store owner Stuart Bloom is tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon — and as the title implies, things don’t go well. Along the way he meets alternate-universe versions of familiar Big Bang Theory faces.

Why You Should Watch: First, a confession: I have never watched even a single episode of Big Bang Theory. Sure, I’ve seen the odd clip here or there, but I really couldn’t even tell you what it’s about. And yet, this show sounds like a really clever spinoff. It takes the sitcom into an entirely new genre, and even though I’m sick of multiverse stuff, this sounds really fun. It has a 71%/78% critic/audience split on RT. New episodes land Thursdays and the finale drops on September 24.

Check out the week before last’s streaming guide below:

ForbesWhat To Watch This Weekend: New Shows And Movies To Stream On Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, Apple TV And MoreBy Erik Kain

The week before had some great TV shows and movies come out as well:

ForbesWhat To Watch This Weekend: New Shows And Movies To Stream On Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, Apple TV And MoreBy Erik Kain

What are you watching these days?
