\n\tA new report says that Hayden Panettiere<\/a> suffered from mysterious pain that felt like \u201cpins and needles\u201d in her legs and that she gave specific instructions during a Manhattan book tour in May that ex-boyfriend Brian Hickerson could not attend. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe New York Times <\/a>on Sunday said Panettiere was accompanied by private security during the visit to Barnes & Noble that gave \u201cclear instructions to keep [Hickerson] away.\u201d Hickerson was present when Panettiere, 36, was found dead Aug. 16 in an apartment in Greenville, S.C. Police initially announced that no foul play was suspected; an initial autopsy\u00a0found no signs of trauma<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tPanettiere wrote about Hickerson in her memoir, This is Me: A Reckoning, that was released in May. The book addresses how Hickerson was violent toward Panettiere, which resulted in three arrests and some time in jail, according to the newspaper.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe NYT also quoted Panettiere\u2019s mom, Lesley Vogel, who said she spent time in Los Angeles with her daughter a year ago \u201cwhen she was in pain. She was afraid. She couldn\u2019t physically function properly.\u201d Vogel took Panettiere to doctors and an acupuncturist to try to treat the feeling of \u201cpins and needles\u201d in her legs that impacted her daughter\u2019s ability to walk. <\/p>\n

\n\tOn Saturday, Melissa Gilbert<\/a>\u00a0cited Panettiere\u2019s death by saying there needs to be better protections for\u00a0child actors<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHow is it possible that no one in the mainstream media has picked up on this?\u201d she began in a Substack\u00a0essay<\/a>. \u201cWithin one year, Michelle Trachtenberg, Daveigh Chase and Hayden Panettiere have died. DIED! Three former female child actors of the same generation are gone. Tragically, heartbreakingly, agonizingly too soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPanettiere had been open about her struggles with depression and addiction. The actress once told People she was given \u201chappy pills\u201d at the age of 15. She got\u00a0Heroes\u00a0at 16, and graduated to drinking and occasionally taking opioids. \u201cMy saving grace is that I couldn\u2019t be messy while on set and working,\u201d she\u00a0said<\/a>. \u201cBut things kept getting out of control [off set].
