<\/p>\nThe Astros announced they\u2019ve mutually agreed to part ways with general manager Dana Brown. Per the team\u2019s press release, Brown\u2019s duties will be \u201ctransitioned\u201d to assistant GMs Charles Cook, Gavin Dickey and Connor Huff and to senior advisor Jeff Bagwell. Owner Jim Crane will oversee baseball operations during the transition period.<\/p>\n
\u201cOver the past four seasons, Dana has helped our organization win two division titles and has led our baseball front office through key scouting, draft and development efforts,\u201d Crane said in a statement within today\u2019s release. \u201cOn behalf of the Astros, I want to thank him for his commitment, energy, and contributions to our organization. We wish he and his family the best.\u201d<\/p>\n
Brown offered his own statement:<\/p>\n

Brown, 59, was hired as Houston\u2019s general manager back in Jan. 2023. The \u2018Stros spent the bulk of that offseason operating without a true general manager in place. Despite having won the 2022 World Series under former GM James Click, Crane reportedly only offered Click \u2014 whose contract expired after said World Series \u2014 a one-year contract extension. Click declined the offer and has since gone on to take a vice president role in the Blue Jays\u2019 baseball ops department.<\/p>\n
Crane and Bagwell spent the bulk of that offseason doing the team\u2019s heavy lifting in baseball operations. It notoriously did not go well. The Astros signed first baseman Jose Abreu<\/a> and setup man Rafael Montero<\/a> to pricier-than-expected three-year contracts that immediately went south: $60MM for Abreu and $34.5MM for Montero. Abreu was released before the contract\u2019s halfway point. Montero logged a 4.94 ERA through just 105 1\/3 innings in the first two seasons of the deal. Brown managed to dump a portion of the contract\u2019s remainder on the Braves in the final year of the deal but had to part with a pitching prospect (Patrick Halligan<\/a>) to get Atlanta to take on that cash.<\/p>\n Brown joined the Astros after those transactions were on the books. The former Braves vice president of scouting spoke often early in his tenure of wanting to engineer an Atlanta-esque wave of extensions over the team\u2019s core, but that vision never really came to pass. The \u2018Stros did quickly extend righty Cristian Javier<\/a> on a five-year, $64MM deal, but extensions for current and former core players like Jeremy Pe\u00f1a<\/a>, Kyle Tucker<\/a>, Hunter Brown<\/a>, Alex Bregman<\/a> and Framber Valdez<\/a> never materialized. Another Jose Altuve<\/a> extension \u2014 five years and $125MM, covering the 2025-29 seasons \u2014 was hammered out in 2024, though contracts of that magnitude for franchise icons are often orchestrated as much by ownership as the baseball operations staff (if not more so).<\/p>\n Some of that lack of extensions for the core was due to Crane, who seems largely opposed to contracts of a certain lengths. The Astros have never given out a longer contract than six years or a larger guarantee than $150MM (Altuve\u2019s prior extension) under Crane. They were reportedly willing to offer Bregman $165MM after his first free agent departure and were willing to go to a similar area on Carlos Correa<\/a> in free agency, but neither of those concepts wound up manifesting in reality. Correa signed a short-term deal with the Twins and re-signed on a second long-term deal (six years, $200MM); he\u2019s since been reacquired, with Minnesota paying $10MM of his annual salary for the contract\u2019s final three years. Bregman signed a short-term deal in Boston, opted out after one season and signed long-term with the Cubs (five years, $175MM).<\/p>\n A look at Brown\u2019s transaction history in MLBTR\u2019s Contract Tracker<\/a> shows that his biggest moves beyond that Altuve extension were signing Josh Hader<\/a> (five years, $95MM), the previously mentioned Javier extension, signing Christian Walker<\/a> (three years, $60MM) and signing Tatsuya Imai<\/a> (three years, $54MM with two opt outs). Notable trades under Brown include sending Tucker to the Cubs (in exchange for Isaac Paredes<\/a>, Cam Smith<\/a> and Hayden Wesneski<\/a>), sending outfield prospect Jacob Melton<\/a> to the Rays in a three-team deal that brought Mike Burrows<\/a> to Houston, acquiring Jesus Sanchez<\/a> from the Marlins (in exchange for Ryan Gusto<\/a> and Chase Jaworsky<\/a>) and acquiring Yusei Kikuchi<\/a> from the Blue Jays in exchange for Jake Bloss<\/a>, Joey Loperfido<\/a> and Will Wagner<\/a>. (Loperfido has since been reacquired in exchange for Sanchez.)<\/p>\n The recent acquisitions of Imai and Burrows \u2014 alongside KBO returnee Ryan Weiss<\/a> \u2014 were intended to bolster the Astros\u2019 rotation this season. Burrow, in particular, was viewed as a potential long-term option in the rotation. Instead, all three have largely flopped. Weiss is no longer on the 40-man roster. Burrows was optioned last month after struggling all season (though the option was rescinded and he was instead placed on the major league injured list due to elbow neuritis). The Astros are trying to make it work with Imai, but he posted a 5.83 ERA in 15 starts before being dropped to a multi-inning relief role.<\/p>\n The erosion of the team\u2019s pitching staff played a major role in the Astros\u2019 early struggles, but Houston has rallied after looking dead to rights early in the season and now sits in first place in the AL West. Brown deserves credit both for the lineup\u2019s success and for scooping up Peter Lambert<\/a> on a minor league deal. Lambert has broken out as a savior for the \u201926 starting staff (3.68 ERA in 22 starts) and is controllable through 2027 via arbitration. It\u2019s one of the better minor league signings in recent memory. Lefty Steven Okert<\/a> has been a similar success story in the bullpen over the past two seasons.<\/p>\n From a big picture standpoint, the Astros have been a winning club during Brown\u2019s tenure. That\u2019s to be expected for a GM in the rare position of inheriting a World Series winner, but Brown\u2019s Astros returned to the ALCS in 2023 and enjoyed a Wild Card berth in 2024. The Astros missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade in 2025, but they\u2019re in position to return in 2026.<\/p>\n It\u2019s hard to judge any general manager in an organization where the owner is as heavy-handed as Crane appears to be in Houston. Crane is regarded to rank alongside Angels owner Arte Moreno and Rockies owner Dick Monfort as one of the game\u2019s most hands-on owners with regard to their day-to-day involvement in baseball operations. That certainly doesn\u2019t give Brown a pass on any misses he had while sitting in the GM\u2019s chair, but any fair or balanced evaluation of his tenure should note that he probably had a bit less autonomy than the majority of baseball operations heads and that he was frequently working with budgetary restrictions due to Crane\u2019s broad aversion to crossing the luxury tax threshold.<\/p>\n Brown now becomes a free agent himself, so to speak. His reference to continuing his 36-year career both speaks to his status as a respected veteran of baseball operations and scouting and signals that he\u2019ll be on the lookout for other opportunities in front offices around the league.<\/p>\n Brown spent three years playing minor league ball as an outfielder in the Phillies system before moving to the other side of the sport. He was a minor league coach in the Phillies system and has since held scouting roles with the Pirates, Expos\/Nationals and Blue Jays, where he worked alongside current Braves president of baseball ops Alex Anthopoulos. When Anthopoulos was hired in Atlanta \u2014 after a stop as a senior vice president with the Dodgers \u2014 he brought Brown aboard as Atlanta\u2019s vice president of scouting.<\/p>\n With a lengthy background in a variety of roles, Brown should draw interest from major league teams in a variety of roles. The Angels and Athletics are the only other clubs operating with an interim general manager at the moment, but it\u2019s common at the end of any season for a handful of top baseball operations jobs to open up. Brown could reasonably be considered for either of those vacancies within the division, and other teams will surely reach out about scouting opportunities, special advisor roles or the same type of high-ranking vice president job he held in Atlanta.<\/p>\n For the Astros, it\u2019s not clear whether the eventual plan is just to elevate one of Bagwell, Cook, Dickey or Huff to a GM or president title. Today\u2019s press release did not make mention of a forthcoming GM search. It\u2019s possible Crane will still announce one at some point, but he\u2019s handled his baseball operations staff in his own unique manner since the departure of former president Jeff Luhnow in the wake of the team\u2019s sign-stealing scandal following the 2017 World Series.<\/p>\n At least for now, it seems they\u2019ll handle things internally. Questions remain about the future of manager Joe Espada, who\u2019s also on an expiring contract and who has similarly been the source of speculation throughout the 2026 season. More information on the future of both the baseball operations staff and Espada will surely become available if and when he addresses the media regarding Brown\u2019s dismissal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Astros announced they\u2019ve mutually agreed to part ways with general manager Dana Brown.
