The instructor asked each of the 30 participants to grab the heaviest weight they could pick up. Pretend it\u2019s on your shoulders or on your back or in your chest, Borowska told them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3g6v2900013j6s0h1xnvp3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cDo as many deadlifts as you can for the amount of time that the person you\u2019ve lost has passed,\u201d Borowska said she told the class. \u201cThat can represent either the months or years you\u2019ve been grieving.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3g6v2a00023j6sf7xdbi5m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Borowska partnered with Grief, Sweat &amp; Tears to offer that class catering to grieving New Yorkers. Founded in December 2025, GST is an initiative that hosts pop-up workout classes across the city each month. It\u2019s \u201cwhere grief meets fitness,\u201d read the Instagram post announcing the $30 class.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3g6v2a00033j6sn4s7cf4e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Borowska has taught Liftonic weight-training classes for five years, but her pop-up grief class was the first time she opened a session by sharing how she lost her mother to lung disease.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3g6v2a00043j6s4bktx1cn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cLet\u2019s keep going,\u201d Borowska urged on the night of the class. \u201cGrief is heavy, but we\u2019re stronger than that, so let\u2019s prove to ourselves and each other how strong we are.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3g6v2a00053j6stzchv1xa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A workout class mixing sweat and tears isn\u2019t a rare event. Rage cycling sessions, anxiety yoga and dozens of similar fitness initiatives have gained traction in recent years, inviting people to choose workout classes based on experiences and emotions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3g6v2a00063j6stpgt9zlz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Do these classes actually help people process grief, rage and heartbreak? Dr. Ryan Martin, a psychologist and author, said there isn\u2019t much research yet available on the topic.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3g6v2a00073j6s3op9vk79@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s not unusual for pop culture to be a little bit further ahead than psychologists are when it comes to advocating some of these things,\u201d Martin said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3g6v2a00093j6stv739y1y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Amid the rise of pickleball tournaments and run clubs, fitness activities are increasingly becoming a venue for social connection. The social networking app Meetup reports more than 3 million members registered across about 2,200 fitness groups globally.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3g6v2a000a3j6ssijx7jn0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The relationships built within these emotion-centered classes reflect another way <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/30\/health\/how-to-make-friends-tips-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">adults can make friends<\/a>. Walking into a grief weight-lifting class, though \u2014 that could be an easier task.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3g82kf000x3j6sx9o9yshb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis might provide a community where you know you\u2019re connecting with other people\u2019s similar experiences, but you\u2019re not just doing it over that experience, which could be too much,\u201d Martin said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3g82kf000y3j6smr3jyz4e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Betsy Kaplan, 29, had that idea in mind when she founded Grief, Sweat &amp; Tears. After she lost her father to suicide eight years ago, Kaplan didn\u2019t have a \u201cgrief space\u201d at home in New York. Montiel lost his mother three years ago when he was 30. As part of GST tradition, participants say the name of the person they\u2019ve lost at the start of each workout class. Montiel said he was petrified the first time he shared his grief out loud, but he found community in the young woman standing next to him, who\u2019d lost her mother.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3gbmig00123j6sqo509q10@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            They clicked immediately, but they also had the workout to bond over. \u201cIt\u2019s really an honest, open safe space to basically open up and get that weight off your chest just from saying those powerful words of who you\u2019re grieving,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3gbmig00133j6sgexor0rz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Over the past six months, about 400 people have participated in a GST class, according to Kaplan.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3gbmig00153j6sqp2qhujk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In Westminster, Colorado, Elisa Thurston held her engagement party at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emotionfitness.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">E-motion Fitness<\/a>, an event space that\u2019s branded as part rage room, part gym, part sanctuary. Participants smash paint-filled glass bottles against the walls, one of which they\u2019ve decorated with an emotion they\u2019re feeling, such as rage or fear. Trainers then lead participants in a 45-minute full-body workout before the class moves into another room fashioned as a recovery space with art and quiet music.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3gbmih00163j6sqyr7aik1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Thurston wanted her family to experience a session \u2014 and get out last- minute wedding jitters, she said. After all, the class was her sanctuary through a breakup, during feelings of inadequacy and when she was frustrated with work.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3gbmih00173j6sh6hddwh1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She needed \u201cto sit and reflect with a group of people that I know care about me, and to be able to talk about that together, and then to be able to express that in a really fun and cathartic way,\u201d Thurston said. \u201cTalk therapy is great to talk through things with somebody, but I do feel like this workout class is just a different way of engaging my whole self in that experience.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3gbmih00193j6sf5wbxutd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Participants often describe \u201creleasing\u201d negative emotions during a workout class, but Martin, the Wisconsin-based psychologist, cautions against saying this. The emotion isn\u2019t going anywhere.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3gbmih001a3j6shzrgsth8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt keeps the heart elevated at a time when the goal is typically to decrease the heart rate,\u201d he explained, referring to the physical activity. \u201cIt keeps your muscles tense at a time when the goal is often to decrease that muscle tension.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/dsc0054.jpg\" alt=\"After a Grief, Sweat &amp; Tears Pilates class in late May, organizers led participants through a journaling session. The event was held in collaboration with the Ghosted podcast.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2000\" width=\"3000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt04ri26000t3j6sdptjqoks@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While the concept of choosing to box or run when you\u2019re on the brink of an emotional breakdown might seem like a positive outlet, it isn\u2019t for everyone, according to Martin.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3ge6vc001i3j6sx2vfb39r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBe wary. Yet researchers still don\u2019t understand specifics around the effects of exercise on people in adverse emotional states.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3ge6vc001k3j6s8po2gxlt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhat we don\u2019t know yet is exactly why it worked so well \u2014 whether it was the exercise itself, feeling safe and supported while exercising, connecting with other people, or some combination of all of those things,\u201d Martin said of the study.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3ge6vc001l3j6slffct2kk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Those considering emotion-centered workout classes should ensure they are able to opt out of a workout whenever they need to, said Dr. Ethan Kross, professor of psychology and management at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He said he encourages people to \u201cself-experiment.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3ge6vd001n3j6snm3edp8n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            What\u2019s Martin\u2019s biggest piece of advice? Don\u2019t just rely on workout classes to process adverse emotions. If you\u2019re dealing with profound trauma or grief, work with therapists or in group therapy, he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3ge6vd001o3j6s4zjyx8ma@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There are other ways to process negative emotions, Martin said. In addition to therapy and exercise, he recommends speaking to your doctor about medication, spending time in nature and reading books about grief.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3ge6vd001p3j6szbmpptpv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kross said he advises participants to first recognize there are multiple tools to deal with their experiences. If you\u2019re someone who engages in negative self-talk, think about how you\u2019d talk to a friend in the same situation, he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt3ge6vd001q3j6sq6l4sgdk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He also suggests \u201cadopting a more detached perspective on what\u2019s happening, becoming an observer, a fly on the wall, thinking about what\u2019s happening to you from a distance.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/gettyimages-1872895344.jpg\" alt=\"There are many other ways to process negative emotions, Martin said.
