About 4,330 Hawaiian Electric customers on the Big Island remain without power as of Monday evening.<\/p>\n
Hawaiian Electric restored power to more than 1,700 customers in N\u0101\u02bb\u0101lehu, Oceanview, Kaloko Mauka, Upper \u0100hualoa, Kalapana, portions of Leilani Estates, Pa\u2018auilo Mauka, Hawaiian Beaches, and Hawaiian Paradise Park on Monday.<\/p>\n
Today, Hawaiian Electric representatives will be available to answer questions and provide status updates on repair and restoration work at\u00a0Vibrant Hawai\u2018i\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0Point of Distribution sites at the Pahala Community Center and the Naalehu Hongwanji.<\/p>\n Relief efforts continue following destruction on the Big Island caused by Hurricane Lala a week ago. Here is what you need to know Tuesday:<\/p>\n Crews are continuing restoration work in some of the hardest-hit areas, including parts of Hawaiian Beaches, Orchidland, Leilani Estates, N\u0101n\u0101wale Estates, North Kona, Cane Haul Road, and Maliu Ridge. Crews are also working on repairing a transmission line needed to restore power to Ka\u02bb\u016b.<\/p>\n About 50 utility workers from Southern California Edison are continuing to work in the Puna and Waimea areas today aided by trucks and equipment that arrived in Hilo yesterday by air shipment via military transport from March Air Reserve Base in California.<\/p>\n Southern California Edison has been providing supplemental support temployees and contractors on Hawai\u02bbi Island through Hawaiian Electric\u2019s partnership in the\u00a0Western Region Mutual Assistance Group<\/a>. <\/p>\n Hawaiian Electric\u2019s estimated restoration time based on the best information:<\/p>\n Within 24 hours for most, extended outages for some<\/p>\n Lower Puna subdivisions<\/p>\n Keauhou, South Kona, Upper Road Kona<\/p>\n Hawaiian Paradise Park, Hawaiian Beaches, Orchidland Estates<\/p>\n Volcano: Half of\u00a0customers have been restored as work continues<\/p>\n Fern Forest and Royal Hawaiian Estates: Remain out into tomorrow.\u00a0<\/p>\n Kohala Mountain: About a third of customers are restored, restoration efforts will continue today, with small pockets possibly taking longer.<\/p>\n Beyond 48 hours, significant extended outage possible<\/p>\n Maliu Ridge and Cane Haul Road<\/p>\n P\u0101hala<\/p>\n Hawaiian Acres, Fern Acres, Leilani Estates and Naniwale Estates<\/p>\n Hala\u2018ula and Haw\u012b: About a third of customers are restored, some pocket outages may take longer to restore.<\/p>\n Upper \u0100hualoa: Crews are making progress in restoration, but some customers are asked to prepare for extended outages.<\/p>\n 5 to 7 days<\/p>\n Kaloko Mauka to Holualoa: Some customers have been restored, but remaining customers should prepare for a possible extended outage due to extensive pole repairs needed.<\/p>\n Orchid Isle Substation to Mountain View Post Office \/ Mountain View and Glenwood: The Orchid Isle Substation has been energized and crews are working to restore the distribution lines. Due to extreme damage, customers should prepare for extended outages.<\/p>\n \u0100hualoa: Crews are working but customers are asked to prepare for extended outages.<\/p>\n By Sept. 8 for full restoration; many sooner:<\/p>\n Wai\u02bb\u014dhinu, N\u0101\u02bb\u0101lehu, Punalu\u02bbu, P\u0101hala, Kapapala and Wood Valley: Repair work on transmission lines to P\u0101hala are near completion but further assessments underway on distribution lines, debris must be cleared before distribution lines can be rebuilt.<\/p>\n This list does not represent every community or pocket of customers currently without power on Hawai\u2018i Island. The utility said even if your area isn\u2019t listed here, it is aware and is working on restorations.<\/p>\n Visit the Hawaiian Electric website<\/a> to get the latest information about power outages and estimated restoration times. For Hawai\u02bbi Island map out outages, click here<\/a>.<\/p>\n Customers who experienced major flooding and have not had their power restored must ensure their main breaker is off and contact an electrician to confirm their system is safe to re-energize once power is restored. If you have photovoltaic panels and battery energy storage systems installed on your home or business, consult your licensed solar contractor regarding normal and emergency operation procedures for your system.<\/p>\n Customers on the Big Island who are without power but see their neighbors have electricity restored should call the utility\u2019s troubleline at\u00a01-855-304-9191<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0Report online<\/a>.<\/p>\n Customers also can all that number to report any downed power lines, which should always be treated as energized and dangerous. Call 9-1-1 for emergency assistance. Customers also can sign up to receive emergency outage alerts<\/a>.<\/p>\n Misinformation about filing claims<\/p>\n There is a lot of misinformation circulating about filing a claim after a power outage.<\/p>\n Hawaiian Electric is not liable for losses<\/a> \u201ccaused by accident, storm, fire, strikes, riots, war, public safety power shutoff or any cause not within the company\u2019s control through the exercise of reasonable diligence and care.\u201d<\/p>\n Losses not covered include, but are not limited to, food spoilage and medication that requires refrigeration, etc.<\/p>\n More information about filing damage claims can be found on the Hawaiian Electric website<\/a>.<\/p>\n The Department of Water Supply <\/p>\n As of 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, the \u201cessential use only\u201d restriction remains in effect for customers in the water systems listed below:<\/p>\n N\u0101\u2018\u0101lehu to Wai\u2018ohinu water service updates (includes Discovery Harbor, Mark Twain Subdivision, Green Sands Subdivision, and South Point Road areas): <\/p>\n Hawaiian Electric power has been restored to N\u0101\u2018\u0101lehu Well and N\u0101\u2018\u0101lehu booster station.<\/p>\n Department of Water Supply will continue to incrementally expand water service areas to N\u0101\u2018\u0101lehu, Wai\u2018ohinu, Discovery Harbor, Mark Twain Subdivision, Green Sands Subdivision, and South Point Road areas.<\/p>\n Department of Water Supply is hauling water to tanks within the system to assist\/facilitate water restoration efforts.<\/p>\n Department of Water Supply is conducting field assessments with Hawaii Emergency Management Agency on damages to its water systems.<\/p>\n Department of Water Supply\u2019s precautionary boil water notice remains in effect for all DWS customers in N\u0101\u2018\u0101lehu, Wai\u2018ohinu, Discovery Harbor, Mark Twain Subdivision, Green Sands Subdivision, and South Point Road areas, until further notice.<\/p>\n Department of Water Supply continues to check for waterline leaks throughout its entire distribution system<\/p>\n Potable water tankers are located across from N\u0101\u2018\u0101lehu Ace Hardware and at the Discovery Harbor Clubhouse for public use. Use water for essential uses only.<\/p>\n Upper Mountain View<\/p>\n Hawaiian Electric power has not been restored yet to DWS Olaa #7 booster and #8 booster station.<\/p>\n Olaa #7 booster is currently operating on generator power.<\/p>\n Department of Water Supply continues to haul water to the Mountain View #2 Tank (North Peck Road\/Ihope<\/p>\n Road).<\/p>\n Department of Water Supply has deployed a potable water tanker along North Peck Road for public use. Use water for essential uses only.<\/p>\n Haw\u012b<\/p>\n Hawaiian Electric power has not yet been restored to it\u2019s uppermost booster station in the Ka\u2018auhuhu area, which is currently operating on generator power. Use water for essential uses only.<\/p>\n P\u0101hala<\/p>\n Hawaiian Electric power has not yet been restored to the P\u0101hala well, which is currently operating on generator power. Use water for essential uses only.<\/p>\n Precautionary Boil Water Notice for P\u0101hala is canceled as of Aug. 20.<\/p>\n Based on an aerial inspection conducted on Aug. 22, Department of Water Supply waterlines to its water sources above P\u0101hala town sustained significant damage and there is no timetable for repair at this time.<\/p>\n Spigots are available on the fire hydrant fronting Ka\u2018\u016b Hospital for Punalu\u2018u residents. Use water for essential uses only.<\/p>\n A 2-inch outlet is available from the fire hydrant fronting Ka\u2018\u016b Hospital for ranchers to fill water tankers.<\/p>\n For more information about water service outages, click here<\/a>.<\/p>\n The Department of Water Supply is also warning the public about reports of individuals posing as employees and attempting to collect payment for an alleged past due water bill. <\/p>\n In the most recent incident, the Department of Water Supply was notified that individuals identifying themselves as employees arrived at a residence in the North K\u016blani Road area and claimed there was an outstanding water bill. The individuals stated that they would only accept payment in cash and also attempted to locate the property\u2019s water shutoff valve. <\/p>\n The resident became suspicious and went inside the home to contact a family member. When the resident returned outside, the individuals had left. The incident is similar to one reported in May involving individuals posing as employees and attempting to collect payment for an alleged past-due water bill from a North Hawai\u2018i resident. <\/p>\n The Department of Water Supply does not show up unannounced at residences to collect payments for past-due balances. Further, Department of Water Supply employees operate marked vehicles and carry official identification cards at all times. <\/p>\n Food distribution<\/p>\n The Salvation Army Hawaiian & Pacific Islands Division is serving up warm meals to high-impact areas across Hawai\u02bbi Island this week.<\/p>\n Lunch and dinner meals are being served at shelters across the Ka\u02bb\u016b District, with nearly 550 meals already served. Walmart, Waiakea Water, L&L Hawaiian Barbecue and Kaleo\u2019s Bar and Grill have joined in the effort.<\/p>\n Brown water advisory<\/p>\n As of Tuesday, a brown water advisory remains in effect for Hawai\u02bbi Island, as waters around the islands could contain higher than normal pollutant levels because of heavy rainfall during the tropical storm. Click here<\/a> for additional information.<\/p>\n Disaster Relief<\/p>\n Hawai\u2018i County Civil Defense Human Services branch is coordinating with Vibrant Hawai\u02bbi and other community partners to distribute supplies at points of distribution in locations around the island. Bulky items such as sofas and beds are now accepted at the Wai\u02bb\u014dhinu transfer station.<\/p>\n Roll-off rubbish bins are available for residential waste and bulk items at 95-5572 M\u0101malahoa Highway in N\u0101\u02bb\u0101lehu.<\/p>\n Transfer stations at Waimea, Kealakehe and Keauhou are accepting green waste 7 days a week.<\/p>\n Bus service<\/p>\n Hele-On Route 90 in Ka\u02bb\u016b is back in service.<\/p>\n Requests for assistance<\/p>\n If you were impacted by Hurricane Lala and need assistance, submit a request for assistance<\/a>. Completing the form will help direct resources to community needs.<\/p>\n Report Damage<\/p>\n Report property damage to Civil Defense. Damage reports can be submitted online<\/a>\u00a0or by calling Civil Defense at 808-935-0031.<\/p>\n Call U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency at 808-933-8334 to report agricultural damage.<\/p>\n Every damage report counts. Reporting damages helps Civil Defense better understand the magnitude of impact caused by Hurricane Lala and document it for potential recovery assistance.<\/p>\n Civil Defense had received 544 residential damage reports and 56 commercial damage reports from Hurricane Lala as of Aug. 21.<\/p>\n Donations<\/p>\n Call the Vibrant Hawai\u2018i Coordination Line at 802-365-1808 to make donations of supplies.<\/p>\n Monetary donations can be made to the Hawai\u2018i Island Strong Fund<\/a> established by the Hawai\u2018i Community Foundation.<\/p>\n 9-1-1 for emergencies only<\/p>\n If you are in a life-threatening emergency, call 9-1-1. For all other storm-related needs, go online and fill out a request for assistance<\/a> or call Civil Defense at 808-935-0031.<\/p>\n County officials urge the public to continue avoiding any unnecessary travel into Ka\u02bb\u016b to help quicken emergency response.<\/p>\n Insurance assistance<\/p>\n Zephyr Insurance, Hawai\u2018i\u2019s hurricane insurance provider, will open two additional claim assistance centers next week on the Big Island to provide in-person assistance to policyholders impacted by Hurricane Lala.<\/p>\n Representatives will be available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 26 in Waimea and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 27 in Hilo to help policyholders report hurricane-related damage, answer questions about their policies and provide guidance through the claims process.<\/p>\n The Waimea assistance center will be located at Allstate Insurance Agency \u2013 Nakoa Kai Professionals, 65-1291 Kawaihae Road, Suite 201. The Hilo assistance center will be located at Business Insurance Services, 1080 K\u012blauea Ave.<\/p>\n Policyholders are encouraged to reserve a timeslot in advance by clicking here<\/a>. Walk-ins will be assisted on a first-come, first-served basis as time permits.<\/p>\n Visit the Zephyr Insurance website<\/a> or call 808-440-5400 (toll free at 866-440-5401) for additional information, including what you need to bring and more about how the insurance company can help.<\/p>\n Public schools<\/p>\n N\u0101\u2018\u0101lehu Elementary and Ka\u2018\u016b High & P\u0101hala Elementary schools remain temporarily closed, and recovery and planning efforts continue after both experienced significant impacts from Hurricane Lala.<\/p>\n Hawai\u2018i Department of Education, Ka\u02bb\u016b-Kea\u02bbau-P\u0101hoa Complex Area and school leaders are developing plans to support continued learning while campus and community recovery efforts continue. Families and employees at both schools will receive additional information directly as plans are finalized.<\/p>\n The state Education Department hopes to have plans finalized and shared by early next week.<\/p>\n Updates are being posted online<\/a>.<\/p>\n Public libraries<\/p>\n The following Big Island public libraries remain closed: Laup\u0101hoehoe, N\u0101\u02bb\u0101lehu and P\u0101hala.<\/p>\n Patrons are encouraged to check the schedule at their local library and the Hawai\u02bbi State Public Library System website<\/a>\u00a0regularly for the latest updates.<\/p>\n Hawai\u02bbi Volcanoes National Park partially reopens<\/p>\n Hawai\u02bbi Volcanoes National Park has partially reopened some areas along K\u012blauea summit following recent storms. Crater Rim Drive West from the park entrance to U\u0113kahuna is open, along with the Welcome Center and Hawai\u02bbi Pacific Parks Association store.<\/p>\n Popular overlooks like K\u012blauea Overlook and K\u016bkam\u0101hu\u0101kea (Steam Vents) are open.<\/p>\n Mauna Loa Road is open to K\u012bpukapuaulu, but Tree Molds and the day-use area are open.<\/p>\n Volcano Art Center Gallery will open. Volcano House will open and offer a limited menu in its restaurants. Kilauea Military Camp will open to authorized patrons.<\/p>\n Still closed in the park:<\/p>\n The Kahuku Unit remains closed due to damage from Hurricane Lala until further notice.<\/p>\n N\u0101makanipaio Campground is closed due to storm damage until further notice.<\/p>\n K\u012bpukapuaulu Trail is closed due to tree hazards. <\/p>\n All areas not mentioned as open remain closed while park staff continue to address hazards, but will reopen as soon as they are deemed safe.<\/p>\n Visitors coming to Hawai\u02bbi Volcanoes National Park from the west side of the island are strongly urged to use Daniel K. Inouye Highway, also known as Saddle Road, or the H\u0101m\u0101kua Coast (Highway 19) and avoid using the Highway 11 southern route through Ka\u02bb\u016b.<\/p>\n Park electricity, the air quality monitoring system and communications were restored following a weeklong outage from Hurricane Lala.
